The New York Times confirmed that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have booked Madison Square Garden for July 3. City officials revealed a permit for street closures around MSG from July 2 through July 4, including a canopy designed to shield arrivals from cameras. TMZ reported a “massive stage” is being commissioned, and Travis confirmed on New Heights that he and Taylor are “live music kind of people.”
With an estimated 500+ guests, Chiefs teammates booking hotel rooms near Times Square, and George Kittle telling Extra TV there’s a strict “no gifts” policy, this thing is happening. And if a massive stage means live performances, the country music guest list matters more than most people think.
Taylor Swift started in Nashville. She wrote her first songs on Music Row, opened for country legends before she could legally drink, and built her career on the same storytelling tradition that built the genre. Those relationships didn’t disappear when she crossed over to pop. Here’s who from country music is most likely to get a seat at MSG next Thursday.
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill
If you had to bet your house on one country act being there, it’s these two.
Taylor’s first single was literally called “Tim McGraw.” She opened for McGraw and Hill on the 2006 Soul2Soul Tour at 16, just a kid with an acoustic guitar. “Faith and I both said, ‘This girl, she’s going to be the biggest star in the world,'” McGraw recalled. They called it before anyone else did.
They share a former tour manager, Robert Allen, who now runs Taylor’s road operation. They collaborated on “Highway Don’t Care” in 2013. McGraw’s family attended the Eras Tour in Nashville, and Faith Hill surprised Taylor on stage during the Fearless Tour in 2009. That’s 20 years of a relationship that started when Tim and Faith took a chance on a teenager nobody else was betting on.
Likelihood: Almost certain.
Kenny Chesney
This is the one that has the internet buzzing.
Chesney canceled his July 3 AND July 4 Las Vegas Sphere dates, and fans immediately connected the dots. TikTok videos speculating about the cancellation have gone viral, and the theory has real legs.
Chesney was supposed to take Taylor on tour early in her career, but couldn’t because the tour was sponsored by a beer brand and she wasn’t 21. He helped her out financially instead, and they’ve remained close friends ever since.
Here’s why the cancellation is so suspicious. In 2008, Chesney’s foot got crushed in a stage elevator at Williams-Brice Stadium, and he still performed the entire show. “I took one look at those fans, and there was no way I wasn’t going on,” he said. He recently went on Bill Maher’s podcast and publicly criticized artists who cancel on fans.
A man who performed with a crushed foot and slams other artists for canceling just dropped two shows on the exact weekend of the wedding. That’s not a scheduling conflict. That’s an RSVP.
Likelihood: Almost certain.
Eric Church
This is the story nobody is talking about, and it might be the best one on this list.
In 2006, Eric Church was the opening act on the Rascal Flatts tour. He played too long and too loud, which is about the most Eric Church thing imaginable, and Rascal Flatts fired him. His replacement? A teenage girl from Pennsylvania named Taylor Swift. That tour launched her career.
Church told the story on The Tonight Show years later. “We were at a festival on the same bill probably not even 30 days later. She walks up on the bus, and had the first gold record of her career. She inscribed it, ‘To Eric, thanks for playing too long and too loud on the tour. Sincerely, Taylor Swift.'”
Taylor Swift’s career exists in part because Eric Church couldn’t stop being Eric Church. She knows it, he knows it, and she thanked him for it with the first gold record she ever earned.
Likelihood: Very likely.
Lainey Wilson
Last week at the Tight Ends and Friends concert in Nashville, Lainey Wilson closed the show, and Taylor surprised her on stage for a duet of “Love Story.” That’s not a courtesy appearance. That’s a friendship building fast through the Kelce world.
George Kittle told PEOPLE at this year’s TEU that Swift “is just such an awesome person to give us her time this close to their wedding.” Lainey was at that same event. The circles overlap more than most people realize.
Likelihood: Very likely.
Kane Brown
At last year’s Tight Ends and Friends, Kane Brown brought Taylor on stage for “Shake It Off.” It was her first live performance since the Eras Tour ended. He’s friends with both Taylor and Travis through the Kelce circle, and he and his wife, Katelyn, are regulars at these events.
He would’ve been at this year’s TEU concert too, but a golf ball to the head had other plans. Hopefully, the 23 stitches have healed in time for the reception.
Likelihood: Likely.
Brad Paisley
Paisley invited Taylor to open for him on his 2007 tour after her debut album floored him. He called her “the voice of her generation” on Country Countdown U.S.A. in 2010. On that tour, Taylor and Kellie Pickler pranked him by walking on stage in “giant sumo-wrestler-looking tick costumes” during his song “Ticks.” Paisley later put Taylor in his 2009 “Online” music video and publicly supported her when she transitioned to pop.
Paisley helped shape who Taylor Swift became as a touring artist. That kind of mentorship earns a seat.
Likelihood: Likely.
Kellie Pickler
Taylor and Kellie were partners in crime during the early Nashville years. They co-wrote “Best Days of Your Life,” pranked Brad Paisley on tour together, and wore disguises to watch him perform because fans would recognize them.
The question isn’t whether Taylor would invite her. It’s whether Kellie is ready. She’s been largely out of the public eye since losing her husband, Kyle Jacobs, in February 2023, and only recently made her first national TV appearance at the American Idol reunion. If she’s in a place where celebrating feels right, she’ll be there. If not, Taylor would understand better than most.
Likelihood: Possible, depending on where Kellie is emotionally.
The Chicks
Taylor brought the Chicks on stage during the Eras Tour and publicly stood by them when most of Nashville wouldn’t. She co-wrote “Soon You’ll Get Better” with them, a deeply personal song about her mother, Andrea’s, cancer battle. Natalie Maines has been close with Taylor for years, and the Chicks have spoken openly about how much Taylor’s support meant during their years of being blacklisted by country radio.
Likelihood: Likely, especially Natalie Maines.
Other Names Worth Watching
Shania Twain is currently in London supporting Harry Styles at Wembley through July 4. Taylor has cited Shania as one of her biggest inspirations, and if the schedule allows a London-to-New York flight on July 3, she could make it. It’s tight, but when the biggest pop star alive asks the woman who inspired her to come to her wedding, you find a way.
Keith Urban collaborated with Taylor on both “Highway Don’t Care” and “That’s When (Taylor’s Version),” but his January divorce from Nicole Kidman creates an awkward dynamic since Nicole likely has her own invitation through Hollywood circles.
Reba McEntire called Taylor and Travis’s relationship “cute” and praised Taylor publicly on Instagram. They’ve crossed paths many times, but the connection is more warm industry respect than deep personal friendship. She’d probably send a beautiful gift and a handwritten note.
Then there’s the wildcard. Morgan Wallen has a genuine friendship with Travis through Kelce events, but given Taylor’s public positions and Morgan’s history, this is the one country invite that would generate more headlines than either side probably wants at a wedding.
Why Country Music Will Be in the Room
Taylor’s dad Scott Swift is longtime friends with Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who “vouched” for Travis when he first pursued Taylor. Taylor was recently spotted wearing a Stevie Nicks T-shirt at an NBA game, fueling speculation about a Nicks performance at the wedding. And with a massive stage being built at MSG, live country music isn’t just possible. It’s probable.
She opened for Tim McGraw at 16. She replaced Eric Church on the Rascal Flatts tour because he played too long and too loud. She pranked Brad Paisley in a tick costume. She co-wrote songs with Kellie Pickler and the Chicks. And Kenny Chesney, a man who performed with a crushed foot, just canceled two Las Vegas shows on the exact weekend her wedding is rumored to happen.
Country music didn’t just raise Taylor Swift. It gave her the friendships, the stage time, and the stories that made her who she is. And on July 3, some of those same people might be sitting in Madison Square Garden watching her marry a tight end from Cleveland who slid into her life the same way country music did, with a lot of heart and zero subtlety.
