In 2015, Garth Brooks’s daughter, Allie Colleen, proved that just like her father, she too has a talent and passion for singing after she released her melancholic version of Keith Whitley’s hit song “Don’t Close Your Eyes” on her Facebook page.

Allie is known as the youngest daughter of the country legend Garth Brooks, who has also served as her inspiration in producing her own music since the beginning of her career.

Growing up in a family of musicians, it was not long enough after Allie followed in her dad’s footsteps as she released her own music, mostly inspired by classic country songs of the 1900s in early 2000. Among the long list of songs she covered on her Facebook page, Allie’s version of Keith Whitley’s 1988 hit was the one that caught listeners’ attention.

Who is the Original Singer of Don’t Close Your Eyes?

Written by Bob McDill, “Don’t Close Your Eyes” was one of the greatest country hits of all time. It was originally sung by Keith Whitley and is about a man whose partner is still stuck in the memories of her past relationship. Since it is a song many listeners can relate to, it immediately climbed up the charts, landing at no. 1 on the US Hot Country Songs (Billboard).

Many artists already released their own version of the song, some of which are Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, Kellie Pickler, and of course, Allie Colleen. In 2015, Allie released her version of the song on her Facebook page which video has already garnered over 220,000 views as of 2024. Her charming aura, together with her angelic voice made the whole raw cover worth watching for.

Along the post, Allie revealed that “Don’t Close Your Eyes” is one of her favorite songs of all time, which is why she hopes that she did justice in covering it – which she did. The video clip may not be as clear and as stable as those produced in studios, but her raw vocals and her guitar skills filled in the gap.

In fact, the simplicity of her cover helped highlight her raw vocals throughout the performances, causing listeners to admire her talent even more. Overall, the emotion she expressed throughout the video is something that listeners have grown fond of.

After listening to Allie Colleen’s cover of “Don’t Close Your Eyes” by Keith Whitley, listeners now yearn and crave more, and we can’t blame them for that.
