Six years before Waylon Jennings made a number-one hit out of the Bob McDill-penned track “Amanda,” Don Williams was the first to bring it to the charts. The track, which was the flip-side record of his number 12 hit “Come Early Morning” from the Don Williams Volume One album, cracked the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.

Meaning Behind the Song

“Amanda” was written by the legendary Bob McDill, a prolific country music songwriter known for penning many Don Williams hits, including “If Hollywood Don’t Need You,” “Good Old Boys Like Me,” “(Turn Out the Lights And) Love Me Tonight” and “It Must Be Love.”

It’s a country ballad that details the experience of a man who lost his ability to deserve the affection of a maiden named Amanda. He reflects on his mistakes in their relationship and expresses a deep longing to be reunited with her. The lyrics convey a sense of sorrow and nostalgia, yearning for another chance to make things right, as expressed by its repeated refrain: “Amanda, light of my life, fate should have made you a gentleman’s wife.”

Williams’ vocal phrasing is impeccable, allowing the lyrics to shine and the emotions to resonate. The melody is simple yet haunting, complementing the heartfelt lyrics perfectly. He struck a delicate balance of the straightforward nature of the lyrics with complex and nuanced emotions depicted by the narrator.  His soulful vocals and nuanced interpretation of the lyrics elevate the song to a timeless classic.

“Amanda” has been covered by several artists across different genres. First was Waylon Jennings’ rendition, which featured a more rock-influenced arrangement. Chris Stapleton, now one of the genre’s top-selling record artists, performed it on the Opry Stage in 2013. At the time, only a few knew his name, but his stripped-down cover definitely blew everyone away. It really gave justice to the song and to the two legendary singers who first sang it.
