In 2005, country singer Billy Currington released a song titled “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right” as part of his album Doin’ Somethin’ Right.

The song instantly became a hit upon its release, landing at no. 1 on the US Hot Country Songs (Billboard), no. 4 on the Canada Country (Radio & Records), and no. 39 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

“Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right” was also credited with both a 3x Platinum and Gold certifications for selling over 3,000,000 units throughout its release, making it Billy Currington’s first number-one hit.

The song has that mellow, relaxed Californian vibe, which is why many of the listeners thought it was the reason why this song became such a hit. Although there is no denying that Billy Currington’s popularity and ethereal voice contributed a lot to the success of the song, there is one more reason why this song made it to the top – its lyrics.

Let’s now find out the meaning behind Billy Currington’s hit song “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right.”

Meaning Behind the Song

Written by Marty Dodson and Patrick Jason Matthews, the song has a straightforward meaning. It simply talks about a man who always makes sure that he gives his all for the woman he loves. He did it so well that he started to notice how affectionate his lover had become towards him.

At this point, the man gives himself a pat on the back as he must have done something right for his woman to reciprocate the love he gives.

Aside from that, “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right” also has an interesting story behind it. According to Marty Dodson, one of the songwriters, he and Jason had a hard time writing a new song at first. There was even a point when they almost decided to go home and call it a day.

However, the two ended up finishing their writing session, causing them to accidentally write “Must Be Doin’s Somethin’ Right” after Jason picked up his guitar and started playing an R&B groove while singing nonsense words.

During those times, the two weren’t expecting “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right” would become Billy Currington and Marty Dodson’s first number-one hit. Because of that, the song instantly had a special place in their hearts.
