We can never deny how this past year has been a difficult one for us all, but for Mickey Guyton – it’s been remarkable and unforgettable. It’s actually the year she really blossomed as an artist. People are starting to appreciate Mickey Guyton songs which are just some of the most thought-provoking tracks of 2020. She then brought them to life with one of the most compelling, fervent voices in any genre.

Born in Arlington, Texas, Mickey Guyton spent most of her childhood listening to a genre-crossing blend of music and was a budding performer who first started singing with her church choir at age five. After many years of working different minimum wage jobs – including as a background vocalist – the young artist moved to Nashville where she made a buzz. She quickly became a presence you can’t ignore in the city’s colorful musical community.

Today, she’s gaining yet wider attention. Check out her songs below to know why!

1. “Better Than You Left Me”

From: Mickey Guyton (2015)

Though Guyton’s debut single, “Better Than You Left Me,” only reached No.34, it left a mark on country fans and music critics alike – with Taste of Country’s Billy Dukes calling Guyton a “pure country vocalist who relies on talent and strong songwriting before anything else.”

The song tells the tale of a woman who was brave enough to stand up against her then-boyfriend, who was indecisive enough to stay with her. Guyton said it was inspired by a breakup with her then-boyfriend, who came running back to her after she had the opportunity to sing for the President of the United States.

2. “Black Like Me”

From: Bridges (2020)

Guyton shares her story of what it’s like being an African-American woman in “Black Like Me.” She detailed the discrimination she went through, such as being considered “different” on the children’s playground. The singer also revealed that her father had to work twice as hard as non-blacks just to get his pay.

Still, Guyton chose to end the song on a hopeful note, wishing we’ll all be free someday.

3. “What Are You Gonna Tell Her?”

From: Bridges (2020)

Guyton is making a statement on the injustices brought upon people of color and young women in a genre dominated by white men through her song “What Are You Gonna Tell Her?”

Guyton performed the emotional tune during the 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards while country star Keith Urban played the piano for her. It was the first time in ACM’s history for a Black female artist to ever give a solo performance.

4. “Heartbreak Song”

From: Single release only (2016)

This upbeat song finds the country singer addressing a former lover, telling him she’s doing just fine after their breakup. Guyton penned “Heartbreak Song” about her then-boyfriend, the same guy that inspired “Better Than You Left Me.”

5. “Bridges”

From: Bridges (2020)

The title track of Guyton’s 2020 EP Bridges is a no-nonsense approach to social issues – directly dealing with the broken and troublesome way in which we are living our lives. The song metaphorically sings about building bridges – from one person to another, no matter the division and differences we have around us.

6. “Hold On”

From: Breakthrough (2019)

Guyton co-wrote the song for the American Christian drama film Breakthrough, which tells the true story of a St. Louis teenager, John Smith. The song “Hold On” was for the specific scene wherein Smith fell through the ice and wasn’t expected to make it through the night.

7. “Somebody Else Will”

From: Mickey Guyton (2015)

Though it’s one of the few songs she did not write herself, Guyton said it’s an easy message for her to deliver.

8. “Salt”

From: Bridges (2020)

Don’t you just hate girls that “aren’t so nice,” creating strife and divisiveness in marriages? Well, that’s what this song is about.

9. “Boys”

From: Dean Brody’s Boys (2020)

Dean Brody was so excited to have the talented newcomer’s remarkable vocals on the title track of his seventh studio album. The two exchange verses about the differences in how men and boys act in a relationship.

It reached the top spot of Billboard Canada Country chart, marking Guyton’s first-ever No. 1 on any chart.

10. “Why Baby Why”

From: Mickey Guyton (2015)

The song tells the story of sorrow and misery in attempting to get over a romantic relationship in “Why Baby Why.”

11. “Safe”

From: Unbreakable (2014)

“Safe” is the final track on Guyton’s debut album collection, which contained a total of four tracks – all of which was co-composed by her.

12. “Rosé”

From: Bridges (2020)

Guyton describes “Rosé” as “100% a protest song,” which she wrote three years ago after noticing how country music at the time did not have any drinking songs for women. So, she drilled down into a certain drink that women could have – and it was absolutely Rosé for Guyton.

13. “Heaven Down Here”

From: Bridges (2020)

Guyton wrote the song as a prayer to a higher power where she asks for comfort during this difficult time.

14. “If I Were a Boy”

In 2016, Guyton uploaded a cover version of Beyonce’s “If I Were a Boy,” where she added a touch of Texas twang to the slow-burning pop hit.

15. “Forever Love”

From: Unbreakable (2014)

If the lyrics of Guyton’s “Forever Love” won’t bring butterflies to your stomach, I don’t know what will.
