In an episode of CMT Cross Country back in 2006, Randy Travis and Josh Turner performed a string of hit songs from their discography together in front of a live audience. The performances included Turner’s “Your Man” and “Long Black Train,” Travis’ “Forever and Ever Amen” and, of course, “Three Wooden Crosses.”

Josh Turner is, without a doubt, a big fan of Randy Travis. In 2020, in the intro of the third video of his Keepin’ It Country series, he talked about the singer, calling him a living legend, an icon, and one of his big heroes. In fact, Travis was the reason he moved to Nashville.

Turner debuted in 2001, and then five years later, he shared a stage with his hero. And it wasn’t just any stage; he got to sing his gospel hits with him, and he was – and still is – a big believer. In fact, it was his relationship with God that guided him and encouraged him to pursue his dream to be a country singer. He said, “I felt like the Lord told me, ‘Hey, if this is what you want, I’ll give it to you, all you have to do is trust me. I’m going to carve out your own path.’”

He trusted Him, and He made it happen.

The Spiritual Journey

Turner and Travis’ duet version of “Three Wooden Crosses” was a collaboration made by heaven.

Travis hit the first verse, and the maturity in his deep baritone voice definitely shone through. And it wasn’t just the quality of his voice that made it sound so sublime, it was also his ability to transport his listeners into the song. That is, listening to his voice will take you to church as if you were speaking to God.

Then, in the chorus, Turner joined him, harmonizing. Their voices complemented each other so well, and it made the song such an easy listen. Turner then smoothly took over the second verse, and after that, they once again showcased their perfectly blended voices.

For the final chorus, Travis gave the singer the spotlight. And he nailed it.

Take a moment to listen to “Three Wooden Crosses” by Randy Travis and Josh Turner and experience the whole spiritual journey.
