“I Came to Believe” Helped Johnny Cash Overcome his Drug Addiction

Everybody knows of the struggle that Johnny Cash had with his drug addiction. In spite of this, the country legend bounced back and made sure that his legacy will not only be about his drug issues.

The country singer battled with addiction throughout his life but that did not stop him from making country hits such as “Ring of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “A Boy Named Sue,” “Man in Black,” and many more.

“I Came to Believe” Made Johnny Cash Believe

Today, we will not talk about his other country hits. The song “I Came to Believe” was instrumental for the singer to overcome his drug addiction. Johnny had a long history of dealing with his drug problem.

He was on the right track back in 1968 when he rediscovered his faith. He ended his drug use at that time. Unfortunately, in the late 1970’s he’d began using amphetamines again.

It was further intensified when he started using painkillers for a serious abdominal injury. It was then decided by his family that he should go for rehabilitation.

During his recovery stage, he wrote the song ” I Came to Believe.” His son, John Carter Cash, then told about the inspiration of the song.

“Faith was empowering to my father, and you can hear his spirit being lifted up.”

Almost everybody can relate to what Johnny Cash is saying in this song. We all have our own struggles to bear and it can be too much. Sometimes, we resort to doing things that will temporarily help us but we are not aware that it may cause a bigger problem.

The gospel tune makes us realize that we can’t handle everything on our own. We need to acknowledge that there is a higher power who sees what we do. We just have to believe and have faith in Him.
