Origins

The original songstress who sang this is none other than the Queen of Country herself, Dolly Parton. She originally sang and recorded it in 1974 as a farewell to her mentor of seven years, Porter Wagoner. This follows her decision to pursue a solo career.

The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart two times. It first reached number one in June of 1974, and then in October 1982, where she re-recorded it for the soundtrack of the movie version of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.”

Meanwhile, there was also a resurgence of its popularity back in 1992. Icon Whitney Houston. She recorded a version of this song for the film “The Bodyguard.” Her version spent 14 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This makes it one of the best-selling singles of all time. It also holds the record for being the best-selling single by a woman in music history.
