The country world is preparing to say goodbye to a legend, and you are invited to be a part of it.

Raul Malo might have left this world, but the music and memories he gave us are not going anywhere. And in true Raul fashion, his final farewell will be as open-hearted as the man himself. Fans, friends, and family will gather at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Nashville on December 18 to celebrate a life that lit up stages and soundtracks for over three decades.

If you ever had the honor of seeing Raul Malo live, you know this was not just a man with a voice. It was a voice that could pull pain from your soul one moment and have you two-stepping the next. From fronting The Mavericks since 1989 to blending his Cuban roots with pure country gold, Raul did not just bend genre lines, he danced over them in snakeskin boots.

So it is only fitting that his send-off be just as inclusive and unfiltered as he always was. His wife, Betty Malo, made it known that Raul’s funeral service is open to the public, because this was a man who gave his all to the fans. You will want to arrive early, around 1 PM Central Time, to claim a seat at the 2 PM funeral mass inside one of Nashville’s most iconic churches. Family and close friends will have reserved seating, but the rest of us are welcome to join in saying farewell to a legend.

And if you are wondering what to bring, skip the flowers unless you are mailing them to the cathedral. Raul’s family is encouraging donations to MusiCares or the Blackbird Academy, two causes that hit close to home for a man who lived to lift others.

This moment of farewell follows what was already a heartbreaking month for fans and loved ones. Malo passed away on December 8 at 60 years old after a valiant fight with cancer. In June 2024, he was diagnosed with colon cancer and later with Leptomeningeal Disease, a rare and devastating condition affecting the spinal fluid and brain membranes. Even when faced with a prognosis that offered little hope, Raul stayed Raul. He kept singing, he kept loving, and he kept showing up.

Just days before his passing, the music community came together for two tribute shows at the Ryman Auditorium. Though Raul could not attend due to a medical emergency, his presence was felt in every chord and chorus. Artists like Ray Benson, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and Jimmie Vaughan joined The Mavericks to honor their brother in sound. He even wrote a letter that was read on stage, thanking fans for their unwavering love, one final act of gratitude from a man who never stopped giving.

The National Music Council also plans to officially honor him again in January at the 42nd American Eagle Awards. He may be gone, but this train is far from off the tracks. Raul Malo’s legacy has miles to go.

Whether you were moved by “Dance the Night Away” or found solace in the raw soul of his voice, there is no denying what Raul meant to the genre and beyond. His funeral will not just be a ceremony, it will be a celebration, the kind where cowboy hats and Cuban hearts unite under one roof to pay tribute to a man who never fit in one box, and thank God for that.

So if you are in Nashville, show up. Bring your stories, your love, and maybe a few tissues. The country world will be mourning, but it will also be singing. Raul Malo would not have it any other way.
