The park was already dark the day she died.
Dollywood had been scheduled to close Tuesday, August 25, long before anyone knew it would become the day Dolly Parton passed away. So the mountains sat quiet in Pigeon Forge while the news traveled around the world.
Wednesday morning, August 26, the gates opened again. That is what she wanted.
“In her spirit, Dollywood will be open Wednesday as Dolly wanted, always reminding everyone with her signature sparkle, ‘the show must go on,'” the company said in a statement posted to its official accounts. “Together, we honor her by carrying forward her message of love, perseverance, and hope.”
She Asked to Be Honored With Laughter, Not Silence
The statement from the park included one line that explained the decision better than anything else could.
Dollywood said Parton’s heartfelt wish was that the park always remain a place of joy, hope, and togetherness, a space where families and friends could honor her memory “not with silence, but with laughter, music, and shared dreams.”
She thought about this. At some point, the woman who built that park in the mountains where she grew up sat down and decided how she wanted people to grieve her, choosing roller coasters and fiddle music over folded hands and a closed gate.
The park’s opening message began, “With heavy hearts, the Dollywood family mourns the passing of our beloved Dreamer-in-Chief, Dolly Parton.” Her official title there was Dreamer-in-Chief. She gave herself that job.
Eugene Naughton, president of Dollywood Parks and Resorts, said working alongside her was the greatest privilege of his life. “Dolly’s heart was as vast as the mountains she cherished, and her compassion knew no bounds,” he said. “She inspired generations to dream boldly and love deeply. While we grieve her loss, we are honored and committed to carry her light forward.”
Alongside the statement, Dollywood posted a black-and-white photo of Parton with four words underneath it. I will always love you.
The Website Crashed Before the Gates Ever Opened
Fans did not wait for permission to start showing up.
Within hours of the news breaking Tuesday, the Dollywood website buckled under the traffic. It stayed inaccessible for more than two hours. A message on the site read that the park was experiencing abnormally high volume and asked for patience.
People were trying to buy tickets to a theme park on the day its founder died. That is a strange kind of tribute, and it is exactly the kind she would have understood. She spent 40 years building a place where grief and joy could sit in the same seat.
Dollywood also asked that anyone wishing to give in her honor consider donating to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This program has mailed hundreds of millions of free books to children around the world.

She Kept Showing Up for That Park Through the Hardest Year of Her Life
Anyone who watched Dolly closely over the last 18 months already knew what Dollywood meant to her, because she kept turning up there when nobody would have blamed her for staying home.
Carl Dean, her husband of nearly six decades, died on March 3, 2025. Eleven days later, Parton walked onto the stage at Dollywood’s Celebrity Theater and surprised a crowd gathered for the park’s 40th anniversary.
“Of course I will always love him, and I’ll miss him,” she told them, “but I wanted you to know that I will always love you.”
She performed an acoustic version of “Celebrate the Dreamer in You” and thanked the guests who had kept the place alive. “It never would have lasted if it hadn’t been for you,” she said.
One year later, opening the 2026 season, she was more honest about how much the grief had cost her. “I just kind of got worn down and worn out, grieving over Carl and a lot of other little things going on,” she said during a keynote at the park. “I’ve had a few little health issues, and we’re taking good care of them.”
Then she joked that fans should not mistake Naughton for her new husband, and made clear she had not started dating anyone.
“I think Carl Dean’s waiting for me,” she said.
That was March. She died five months later.
The last time Dollywood opened something new, a roller coaster called Nightflight Expedition, she could not make it in person. She sent a video instead, telling fans her Nashville doctor had kind of clipped her wings.
Dolly Parton bought into a struggling theme park in 1986 and put her name on it because she wanted the people of Sevier County to have jobs close to home. Forty years later, it is the biggest ticketed attraction in Tennessee, and the mountains she came from are full of families who never had to leave to find work.
She showed up for that place after she buried her husband. She showed up for it when she was too tired to tour. When she could not show up at all, she sent a video so nobody would feel forgotten.
Wednesday morning, the gates opened without her, and every ride ran, and the music played in the mountains, exactly the way she asked.
