She left the bell-bottoms and the cowboy hat at home and walked out in a black suit with a choir behind her, singing a hymn that has carried this country through every hard thing it has ever faced.
Lainey Wilson performed “Amazing Grace” at the 25th anniversary commemoration of the September 11 attacks, singing beneath the twin beams of the Tribute in Light in Lower Manhattan. She appeared as part of “9/11 Tribute in Light: Live from Lower Manhattan,” alongside Cyndi Lauper and John Ondrasik of Five For Fighting.
Each artist performed directly under the beams, at the site where the Twin Towers once stood. For the first time in 25 years, the commemoration was broadcast live.
Wilson chose the hymn herself and disappeared into it. The woman known for her flare jeans and her hat wore neither. She stood in a black suit and let the choir and the song do everything else.
She Said the Day Is a Reminder of Who Americans Are
Ahead of the performance, Wilson said she was honored to take part in a moment to recognize first responders, families, and the communities forever changed by the attacks.
“The courage, bravery, and heroism displayed in response to 9/11 is a reminder of who we are as Americans and the strength and compassion we show one another at our most difficult moments,” she said in a statement.
The response online came fast. Viewers flooded social media to say the rendition brought them to tears.
The ceremony honored the 2,977 people killed in the attacks. It also featured both the American and British national anthems, as well as a performance of “Hymn to the Fallen.” Every September 11 since 2002, the Tribute in Light has sent two white beams four miles into the sky over Manhattan, one for each tower.
Singing beneath them means standing inside a memorial while it is lit.
She Was Nine Years Old When It Happened
Lainey Wilson was born on May 19, 1992, in Baskin, Louisiana, a farming town of a few hundred people. On September 11, 2001, she was nine years old.
She did not perform at that memorial as an artist honoring a piece of American history. She performed as someone who was a kid in a Louisiana classroom when the towers fell, who grew up across the twenty-five years that followed, and who came back to the site as one of the biggest names in country music to sing a hymn for people she had never met.

The Hymn Fits Where She Has Been All Year
Anyone following Lainey Wilson through 2026 saw this coming, even if the occasion is one nobody would have wished for.
In April, she released “The Jesus I Know Now” with Brandon Lake, a country worship and southern gospel track co-written with Emily Weisband and Luke Laird. It was the clearest statement of faith she had ever put on a record.
Then in June, she stopped her show at Zoo Amphitheatre in Oklahoma City to talk to the crowd about God. She told them she reads the Bible almost every day and that she had learned to go to Him first instead of the things she used to reach for. She closed by telling ten thousand people there is one north star, and they all know who it is.
Three months later, she sang “Amazing Grace” at Ground Zero.
Wilson has spent this year making her faith public, and it has never felt like a marketing decision. It has felt like a person working something out loud. On the 25th anniversary of the worst day in modern American history, that honesty is exactly what the moment called for.
“Amazing Grace” has been sung at American funerals, memorials, and disasters for two centuries because it does not try to explain anything. It just sits with people in the worst moment of their lives and keeps them company.
Wilson understood that. She left the hat at home, stepped under the lights, and sang it straight.
