In 1977, country legends George Jones and Tammy Wynette teamed up for a duet of the 1947 pop standard “Near You.”

Kermit Goell wrote the track’s lyrics, and Francis Craig composed the music. And then it was first recorded by Craig and His Orchestra at Castle Recording Studio in Nashville in 1947 under Bullet Records. After its release, the song immediately enjoyed strong chart success, peaking at number one on the Billboard Best Sellers chart after a 21-week stay and spending 17 consecutive weeks at number one on the Most Played by Jockeys chart. Billboard also named it the top disc jockey record in the same year.

It wasn’t until 2009 that The Black Eyed Peas surpassed their record with their two number-one hits, “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling.”

In the country genre, legendary producer Billy Sherill, known for his influential role in the Nashville sound, brought two of the biggest names in country music to breathe new life into the classic. Their version became a number-one hit and solidified their status as a powerhouse partnership.

Meaning Behind the Song

Jones and Wynette recorded “Near You” in 1974, but they only released it three years later, in 1977. By then, they were already divorced. The two married in 1969, had a filed divorce in ‘73 but reconciled a month after, and officially divorced in 1975. Despite going through a tumultuous phase in their relationship while recording the song, their duet bore no sign of it. Their musical chemistry remained undeniable.

The song talks about love, longing, and a deep yearning to be close to someone you love. It captures the need for romantic connection and highlights the idea that true happiness is found in the presence of a loved one.

In the next verses, they share how they wanted to not be apart for more than two lips away and, if they could, spend all the hours with each other. That is, they’d be more than content just to be near each other. Finally, in the end, they sing, “Make my life worthwhile / By telling me that I’ll / Spend the rest of my days / Near you.”

In addition to the well-crafted lyrics and musical composition, Jones and Wynette’s seamless harmonies and unique blend of their voices made the song a timeless piece that continues to touch hearts. Let George Jones and Tammy Wynette’s powerful performance of “Near You” take you on the journey of love and longing.
