Singer-songwriters Ashley McBryde and Carly Pearce teamed up for a brand-new track, “Never Wanted to Be That Girl.”

The powerful duet came from Pearce’s new album 29: Written In Stone, which was recently released last Friday, September 17. It features fifteen tracks, including Pearce’s earlier single, “Next Girl.”

About The Song

Just like most of Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde songs, “Never Wanted to Be That Girl” leaned into a drama-filled tale. Both women wrote the track with co-producer Shane McAnally, which Pearce described as a “story of how a bad man happened to two good women.”

It finds McBryde and Pearce sharing the bitter reality of a two-timing lover, as told from two points of view. Ashley McBryde offers the perspective of the ‘other woman’ caught in a relationship with a man, not knowing that he was married. Meanwhile, Pearce sings from the viewpoint of the man’s wife, condemning her ignorance to the fact that her husband was being unfaithful.

It builds up into a thrilling back-and-forth exchange as they own up to their feelings, detailing the shock and pain that follow as the truth comes out. In the end, both women found themselves regretting their own situation rather than directing their spite towards each other.

McBryde and Pearce noted that they were able to bring themselves into the song’s story throughout the writing session. Both artists are nominated for various awards at the forthcoming Country Music Association Awards. Pearce is nominated for Album of The Year, while McBryde is also nominated for Song of The Year and Single of The Year for the track “One Night Standards.” Meanwhile, both women are pitting for Female Vocalist of The Year.
