A duet performed by Anita Cochran and Steve Wariner, “What If I Said” was a track in Cochran’s Back To You album released in 1997. The famous duet became Cochran’s only song that topped the US Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks Charts. In 1998, the song was nominated for Vocal Duet of the Year by the Country Music Association.

In “What If I Said,” Anita Cochran and Steve Wariner portray characters who aren’t in a happy relationship with their respective partners. They try to tell their feelings for each other, yet both parties are afraid to take the jump, afraid to hurt their partner’s feelings and theirs.
