Priscilla Presley has lived a life filled with love, heartbreak, and unimaginable fame, but even after decades in the spotlight, seeing her own story play out on the big screen was surreal. While she was deeply honored that acclaimed director Sofia Coppola brought her memoir Elvis and Me to life in the 2023 film Priscilla, one detail didn’t sit quite right with her.

The Ending Didn’t Reflect Reality

During a panel discussion at MegaCon Orlando on February 7, Presley opened up about her experience watching Priscilla and how it felt to see her younger self portrayed in such an intimate way.

“It is awkward to see yourself on film,” she admitted, according to People. However, she expressed gratitude that Coppola wanted to tell her story. She was impressed by how accurately most of the film captured her life with Elvis.

Still, one aspect of the movie didn’t match her real-life experience: the ending.

“I wasn’t really happy about the ending,” Presley shared. “It didn’t end that way. Elvis and I ended very lovingly.”

Unlike the film’s portrayal of a stark and final separation, Presley emphasized that she and Elvis maintained a close relationship even after their divorce in 1973.

A Love That Never Truly Ended

Though their marriage ended, Presley explained that Elvis never fully let go. He would often show up at her home unannounced, sometimes at odd hours of the night.

“He would drop by my home unannounced,” she recalled. “I was going with someone, by the way… It was two o’clock in the morning, and I knew who it was, so I quickly tried to get to the door before he rang the doorbell. And of course, he came in; we went in the kitchen; we talked for a couple of hours.”

This ongoing connection between the two was a testament to their deep bond. Even after moving on romantically, they remained tied to each other in a way that the film, according to Presley, didn’t fully capture.

Why She Left the King of Rock and Roll

While their love was undeniable, Presley also spoke about why she ultimately had to walk away from the marriage. The pressures of Elvis’s fame were overwhelming, and the endless attention from female fans became too much to bear.

“He was famous, he was loving, he was a beautiful, beautiful man, [but] I just couldn’t take it,” she said. “It just was not a good life for me.”

Fan mail from women thanking Elvis for “the best night” was a painful reminder of the lifestyle he led. Despite her devotion to him, she knew she couldn’t continue in a marriage where she constantly competed for his attention.

The Legacy of Their Love

Even though Presley wasn’t entirely satisfied with Priscilla‘s ending, the film still powerfully portrays her journey from a teenage girl swept into Elvis Presley’s music world to a woman who had to make the painful decision to find her own path.

Their love story was complicated, filled with passion, heartbreak, and an unbreakable connection that lasted long after their divorce. While Hollywood may have taken creative liberties, Presley’s real-life story proves that some bonds transcend even the hardest goodbyes.
