When professional wrestler turned actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson sang Elvis Presley’s hit song “Are You Lonesome Tonight” in the 2007 film The Game Plan, it was safe to say that he dang impressed the audience. He was no Elvis, sure, but he gave the song justice. And though this wasn’t The Rock’s first venture into singing in a movie, as he already performed Loretta Lynn’s “You Ain’t Woman Enough” in the 2005 crime-comedy film Be Cool, it still felt like a “Who knew [he could sing that well]” kind of moment.

As The Story Went

In the film, The Game Plan, The Rock played the role of a hotshot professional quarterback named Joe “The King” Kingman, who is also a super fan of “The King” himself – Elvis Presley. He was living the bachelor life until everything changed.

After his team won big, he returned home, and on his doorstep was a little girl named Payton claiming to be his biological daughter. His life did a 180-degrees-turn, and he had to struggle to find the middle ground between his high-profile life and as a father to a daughter he had just met. And so one of the comforts he turned to when his relationship with Payton wasn’t going good was Elvis Presley’s song. In one scene, Joe, aka The Rock, grabbed the guitar (which says ‘Elvis Presley on the neck), leaned up against the wall, and sang one of Elvis Presley’s songs, “Are You Lonesome Tonight.”

And he definitely nailed it.
