Wynonna Judd started and boomed in the country music scene in the 1980’s as a part of the famous duo The Judds. She is the daughter of Naomi Judd, the other half of The Judds. Since the split of the duo in 1991 (due to the illness that struck Naomi), Wynonna paved way for her own career as a solo artist. From then on, she has released hit singles proving her success as an entertainer in her own right. A talented singer with a strong personality, Wynonna has lived a life full of challenges yet she has overcome them from time to time.
Born in Kentucky on May 30, 1964, Wynonna Judd is the first of the two daughters of Naomi Judd. At a young age, she was raised in poverty by her mother. However, both mother and daughter shared a love of singing that is why they moved to Nashville to pursue a career in music. In 1983, the Judds were successfully signed to RCA records. This event paved the way to the start of their stardom in country music.
The Judds became one of the award-winning duos in country music. They sold over 20 million albums and amassed five Grammys. However, while they were enjoying success, Naomi fell ill leading the duo to split and Wynonna pursued a solo career.
Most of her fans know her as an honest woman who lives her life candidly, there are still some things many don’t know about her. Hence, here are five things about Wynonna Judd that you might not know.
1. Wynonna Judd’s real name is Christina Claire Ciminella
Wynonna Judd was originally neither a Wynonna nor a Judd. She was born Christina Claire Ciminella. Her father’s name was Charles Jordan who she had never met. While pregnant of Wynonna, Naomi married Michael Ciminella. Hence, Wynonna got Ciminella as her family name when she was born. After a few years, her mother divorced Ciminella but it was not until the creation of the mother-daughter duo when they decided to use the name “Judd”. Naomi decided to use her maiden name to sound more American.
2. Wynonna Judd and actress Ashley Judd are half-sisters
Naomi has not just one famous daughter, but two. Actress Ashley Judd is her child with ex-husband Michael Ciminella. Ashley has had leading roles in various films. Aside from being an actress, she is also a political activist.
3. Wynonna Judd did not invite her mom or sister to her wedding
In 2012, Wynonna Judd was married to country music artist Cactus Moser. However, did you know that Wynonna did not invite her mom Naomi and sister Ashley to her wedding? Interestingly, they just live close to each other in Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee. Sources reveal that the family was experiencing problems that time rooting to the 2011 book written by Ashley Judd entitled “All That Is Bitter and Sweet”.
4. Cactus Moser, Wynonna’s current husband lost his leg in a motorcycle accident while they were newlyweds
While riding his motorcycle, Cactus Moser was hit by an oncoming car, severing his leg. Wynonna was also riding her motorcycle from behind when the incident happened. In an interview with LA Times, she revealed that it was a difficult year yet the experience made their relationship even stronger.
5. The Judds is the most successful female duo in country music
In the 1980’s, The Judds have cemented their spot in the industry as the most successful duo in country music history in terms of commercial status. However, their record was only broken by Brooks & Dunn in the 90’s. The Judds produced 15 no. 1 singles from their five studio albums. In addition, every album was certified Gold. Their hit, “Why Not Me” went double-Platinum. Overall, the duo sold more than 20 million units worldwide.
