Willie Nelson’s Wife Slams Inaccurate Claims That Lukas Nelson Is Caring for Them

Willie Nelson and his wife Annie D'Angelo appear smiling together, shortly after Annie slammed false claims about their son Lukas caring for them.

Annie D’Angelo doesn’t play when it comes to her family. After a bogus report claimed their son, Lukas Nelson, had stepped in to take care of Willie Nelson and Annie full-time, she jumped straight into the comments section and shut it down with the force of a Texas thunderstorm.

It all started when AXS TV posted a photo of Willie, Annie, and Lukas with a caption that sounded sweet… but wasn’t even close to accurate. According to them, Lukas was proudly “taking care of 91-yr-old dad, Willie Nelson & 63-yr-old mom, Annie D’Angelo,” making sure they were “comfortable and living their best life.”

The problem is, Annie isn’t 63—she’s 68. And more importantly, she’s still the one taking care of her husband, just like she’s been doing for decades. There is no PR spin, no management team running the show, just Annie handling her business like she always has.

And she wasn’t about to let that nonsense slide.

“Hey @axstv why would you take a photo from someone else’s feed (my friend @marthacasselbodell) & then make stuff up?” she fired off in the comments.
“I still take care of my husband (Lukas has always been there for us as has his brother @particlekid) and love it. Then you claim our incorrect ages. Don’t do that. Just ask.”

Sharp. Direct. Zero sugarcoating.

To be clear, Lukas and Micah Nelson — both insanely talented musicians — are always there for their folks. But Annie made it crystal damn clear that she’s the one holding it down day in and day out, the same way she has since she and Willie first tied the knot back in 1991.

And for the record, Willie isn’t slowing down either. The man’s out on the road for the Outlaw Music Festival, still sharing stages with legends like Bob Dylan, still packing venues, and still doing what he loves. Back in November 2024, Willie told the Associated Press he was feeling pretty damn good for 91: “I don’t feel bad. I don’t hurt anywhere. I don’t have any reason to worry about dying.” Hell, he takes better care of himself than most people half his age.

And a huge part of that? Annie D’Angelo.

During the pandemic, when Willie got sick, Annie turned their house into a hospital. She didn’t just take care of him — she fought for him. “There were a couple of times when I wasn’t sure he was going to make it,” she told The New York Times in 2022. But she stuck it out like a true badass.

Willie’s never been shy about giving Annie her flowers, either. He calls her “my lover, my wife, nurse, doctor, bodyguard.” Pet rattler, too — and you better believe that’s a compliment when it comes from Willie Nelson.

They’ve been through it all — from movie sets (they met on Stagecoach in 1986) to raising two sons to fighting off every bad headline that tried to write Willie off before his time.

So next time someone wants to speculate about who’s taking care of who, here’s a free tip: ask Annie first — if you’re brave enough.

Otherwise? You’re gonna find out real fast that she’s not the one.
