Faith Hill was already married to Tim McGraw when she put a song on her own album about watching an ex move on as if the love had never happened, and her husband sang it with her.
The song is “Like We Never Loved At All,” a duet from Hill’s 2005 album Fireflies. Genius lists its release date as August 1, 2005, and McGraw comes in on the second verse. It went on to win the couple a Grammy.
Country music’s best-known married couple took home a trophy for a breakup song, and on Oct. 6, the two of them celebrated 30 years of marriage.
‘Like We Never Loved at All’ Tells the Other Side of ‘It’s Your Love’
Taste of Country calls it an angst-ridden power ballad, and the story it tells is a hard one. A relationship has ended, one person seems to have moved on, and the other is still trying to make sense of what went wrong. At its center is the pain of watching an ex move on as if the relationship never happened.
It tells a much different story than the duet most fans remember them for. Hill joined McGraw’s tour as his opening act in 1996, she from Mississippi and he from Louisiana, and within a year they were married. Their romantic duet “It’s Your Love” became the song they sang together at the 40th Grammy Awards, the first time Hill ever performed on the Grammy stage.
“It’s Your Love” was the romance, and “Like We Never Loved At All” was the same two voices singing the other side of it.
The Breakup Song Won Faith Hill and Tim McGraw Their Second Grammy for Best Country Collaboration
McGraw and Hill had already won Best Country Collaboration in 2001 for “Let’s Make Love,” and “Like We Never Loved At All” won them the same award in 2006. Four other songs by the couple have been nominated for Grammys as well.
They performed the song on The Oprah Show and called it their hit, and in April 2006 they set out together on their Soul2Soul II tour. On The Oprah Show, Hill once summed up what holds their life together.
“It really is all about God, it’s about family and it’s about hard work,” she said.
McGraw once gave the credit to the music itself in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning’s Tracy Smith.
“Music has brought me everything good that’s happened in my life,” he said.
For a man who met his wife on the road, that line covers a lot of ground.
The Grammy Faith Hill and Tim McGraw won in 2006 went to a song about two people acting like they never loved at all. Thirty years after their wedding, the couple who sang “Like We Never Loved At All” have spent three decades proving the opposite.
