Lainey Wilson took the Grand Ole Opry stage with Vince Gill and left the crowd with chills as they honored the one and only Dolly Parton in the most powerful way.
It was a night built on love and legacy as the Opry Goes Dolly event rolled into Nashville on January 17, just two days before Dolly’s milestone 80th birthday. And when Lainey Wilson and Vince Gill walked into the spotlight, the whole house knew something special was about to happen.
Wilson, fresh off a whirlwind year of accolades and chart-toppers, brought her Louisiana fire and a whole lot of heart to the stage. She kicked off her set with fan-favorite tracks “WWDD (What Would Dolly Do),” “Somewhere Over Laredo,” and “4X4XU.” Each song set the tone for a night that would pay tribute to the woman who inspired it all. Then came the moment that lit the place up like a Tennessee sunrise. Lainey brought out a living legend in his own right, Vince Gill.
“This man right here is a hero of mine,” Lainey said, eyes shining. “And I will say this, a lot of people say, ‘Don’t meet your heroes.’ Well, there are two of my heroes that I’ve met so far—Mr. Vince Gill and Miss Dolly Parton.”
Lainey told the crowd that she could listen to Vince sing the phone book and still be in awe. Gill took the stage with his signature calm and class, and the two country powerhouses performed a stunning rendition of “Light of a Clear Blue Morning.” The song, originally released in 1977 by Parton, has taken on new life this year thanks to a powerful re-recording that features Lainey alongside Miley Cyrus, Reba McEntire, and Queen Latifah, with proceeds benefiting pediatric cancer research.
Before the duet began, Lainey took a moment to reflect on her relationship with Dolly. She shared that she had recently spent time in the studio with her and called the icon “the real deal” with “a heart of gold.”
“She is just as great as all y’all think she is,” Wilson said. “What you see is what you get. She’s got a heart of gold, and I’m honored to be here celebrating her tonight.”
The emotional high point came when the pair launched into Dolly’s timeless classic, “I Will Always Love You.” Vince opened with the first verse, then Lainey took the second before the two joined together to bring the chorus home in harmony so sweet it shook the rafters. As photos of Dolly through the years lit up the screen behind them, the crowd rose to their feet in a standing ovation that roared through the Opry house.
The evening was full of incredible performances by a star-studded lineup that included Elizabeth Nichols, Mark Wills, Sierra Hull, Rhonda Vincent, and Trannie Anderson, who made her official Opry debut.
In true Dolly fashion, the night also gave back. Five dollars from every ticket sold was donated to the Imagination Library, Dolly’s book-gifting program that continues to bless millions of children. And to top it off, an exclusive online auction went live featuring a rhinestone-covered microphone stand signed by Dolly herself. The auction will benefit the Opry Trust Fund, which has already distributed more than $5.7 million to country music industry workers in times of need.
Lainey and Vince showed the world how country honors its queens. And when it comes to Dolly, there’s no tribute big enough to match the mark she has left on music and hearts around the world. But if ever there was a night that came close, Opry Goes Dolly just might have been it.
