“I Can’t Unlove You” tells about the pain of losing the love of your life and the reeling emotions that come with letting go of everything you once cherished with that person. Despite what seems like Kenny Rogers serenading you, the song is filled with painful reminiscing and wishful thinking. Indeed, listening to it might just as well remind you of your past heartbreaks and open up old wounds.

The song was written by Wade Kirby and Will Robinson and has been covered in both English and Portuguese. In Brazil, the Portuguese pair Edson & Hudson recorded “I Can’t Unlove You” under the title “Eu No Sei Dizer Que Eu No Te Amo.”

“I Can’t Unlove You” received positive reviews from Billboard and was even praised as a gorgeous ballad delivered in Kenny Rogers‘ signature warm and straightforward style, making it one of the best among other Kenny Rogers songs.

The song climbed in the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart at #57 during the week of December 10, 2005. It was to be his final Top 20 hit.

Water and Bridges was the 26th album released by Rogers, peaking at #14 on the Billboard 200 chart and at #5 on the country albums list. In 2006, Rogers released 3 more singles, all of which made it onto the national chart (“I Can’t Unlove You,” “Calling Me,” and “The Last Ten Years (Superman)”).
