Long before they were legends, Brooks & Dunn were just two guys chasing a country music dream. And like a scene straight out of a Nashville fairytale, they still remember the exact moment that dream paid off literally.
During a recent visit to The Bobby Bones Show, the duo shared a laugh-filled story about the day they realized they were millionaires. It was not in some big office or fancy suite. It was on the tour bus, with a couple of royalty checks and a whole lot of disbelief.

“We were on the bus,” Ronnie Dunn recalled. “We had gotten royalty checks, like the same day. I open it first, I didn’t know what it was. I turn it and I say, ‘Whoa, Kix, I just became a millionaire!’ And he’s like, ‘Okay, asshole.’”
Kix Brooks, cracking up alongside him, remembered opening his check seconds later. “Yeah, me too,” he said with a grin. “Literally came in the mail with two commas on it, and a number in front of it.”
That moment, one they both clearly remember, hit hard in the best way. These were two guys who had spent most of their lives grinding it out, writing songs, and hustling from honky-tonk to honky-tonk. Suddenly, a piece of paper in the mail changed everything.
“Nothing more fun than literally being broke on your ass your whole life and walking back with a check with two commas on it,” Brooks added. It was the kind of moment that makes all the late nights, long drives, and no-name gigs worth it.
Their story is all the more satisfying when you remember how Brooks & Dunn started. Label execs paired the duo together in the early 1990s, a bit of a risk at the time. But lightning struck with their debut single, “Brand New Man,” which rocketed to No. 1 in 1991. That song kicked off a streak of hits that ran for decades and solidified their place as one of the most successful duos in country music history.
Now, Country Music Hall of Famers, they’ve sold more than 30 million albums, won countless awards, and still pack out venues across the country. But for all the success and recognition, stories like this remind fans why they love Brooks & Dunn. No matter how many chart-toppers they’ve had, they’ve always stayed grounded.
Sure, the money came, but it came with the humility and humor that only Brooks & Dunn could deliver. They did not throw a party or post a flashy announcement. They just sat on the bus, opened their mail, and laughed about it.
More than 30 years later, Brooks & Dunn are still out on the road with at least 15 shows scheduled this year. Whether you’ve seen them a dozen times or never at all, there’s something timeless about their music and their story.
Because before they were millionaires, they were two guys on a bus. And they never forgot it.
