In 1987, two singers still waiting on their big break were recording a demo for songwriter Kent Blazy, and both of them were married to other people.

Garth Brooks had married Sandy Mahl the year before, and Trisha Yearwood had married her first husband, Christopher Latham, that same year.

Years later, ahead of his A&E documentary, Brooks described what went through his head the day he met her.

“I had been married 13 months when I met her. When someone said, ‘What’d you think when I met her?’ I said, ‘I felt like I just met my wife,’ which is weird, right?” he said.

It would take them 18 years to get from that demo session to a wedding. Before either of them was a star, he made her a promise, and their love story is the story of how he kept it, along with the bigger promises that came later, a ring on a bronze statue in Bakersfield and vows said at home in Oklahoma.

On December 10, 2026, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood will mark 21 years of marriage.

Garth Brooks Promised Trisha Yearwood a Record Deal and Kept His Word

The songwriter behind that session would come to matter in Brooks’ story. According to evoke.ie, Kent Blazy wrote two of Garth’s biggest hits, “If Tomorrow Never Comes” and “Ain’t Goin’ Down,” so the man whose demo brought the two singers together was also behind some of the songs that would make Brooks a star.

In the late 1980s, Brooks told Yearwood that if he made it, he would help her get her own record deal and put her on his shows. Then he made it, and he kept every part of that promise.

Yearwood sang on his second album, No Fences. She signed her own recording contract, and in 1991 she opened for him. Her breakout hit, “She’s in Love With the Boy,” came out that March, so the young singer warming up Garth Brooks’ crowds had a hit of her own to give them.

Brooks did one more thing for her that year. He co-wrote her 1991 hit “Like We Never Had a Broken Heart,” which put his name on one of the first hits of her career.

Decades later, Yearwood told Extra what kind of man she married.

“He’s my person… He has accomplished so much in his career, but he is happiest when other people win,” she said.

In 1991, the other person winning was the singer he had made that promise to.

Their Friendship Lasted Through Three Marriages Before They Became a Couple

Yearwood’s first marriage ended in 1991, the same year she opened for Brooks. In 1994 she married bassist Bobby Reynolds, and they stayed married until 1999.

The music kept the two friends close through all of it. Their first major collaboration, “In Another’s Eyes,” came six years after “Like We Never Had a Broken Heart,” and according to evoke.ie, they sang background vocals on each other’s records along the way.

In 1999, both of their marriages came apart. Yearwood and Reynolds ended theirs that year, and Brooks and Mahl separated, though their divorce did not become official until 2001.

Yearwood has pointed more than once to those friendship years as the reason the marriage works. She told SheKnows in 2021 that the groundwork was laid by being friends for such a long time before they were a couple. She told Closer Weekly that, at the end of the day, it is the friendship and the respect that sustains you.

By the time they went public with their romance in 2002, according to evoke.ie, they had been friends for about 15 years.

Garth Brooks Retired to Oklahoma and Faced the Hardest Years of His Life

Brooks retired from country music in 2000 and moved to Oklahoma. In his book The Anthology Part IV: Going Home, he wrote about that decision without softening it.

“So, I announced my retirement and went to Oklahoma. That’s where you’re going to learn to be a dad, watch your marriage end, get as lost as you’ve ever been.”

When they first got out there, he wrote, they stayed with Sandy’s parents. In the 2019 A&E documentary Garth Brooks: The Road I’m On, Mahl explained the distance that had grown between them. She said he would be gone eight to 10 weeks at a time and come home to number-one parties, shows and awards nights, and that the two of them grew apart really quickly.

Brooks lived in a former bunkhouse for five years. For 14 years, he and Mahl traded the kids at six o’clock every day, and when the time came to marry again, he asked her permission first. He wrote that he hopes that era stays the roughest of his life, and that he never has anything worse.

Six o’clock every day for 14 years is its own kind of promise, kept far from any stage.

In the same book, he wrote about the woman who was coming into his daughters‘ lives.

He wrote that there was no manual for what he was looking to build, and that the big thing for him, the savior on the horizon, would be Trisha, because she was going to come in and his girls would have not only a companion who was not their mom or their dad, but an example who lived with them.

The friend from the demo session became the woman he later called the savior on his horizon.

Garth Brooks Proposed to Trisha Yearwood in Front of 7,000 People

In May 2005, Brooks was at Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, California, for the Legends in Bronze event, where a bronze statue of him was unveiled. The venue carried country history of its own. Owens built it as a home for the Bakersfield sound, and he died the following March, less than a year after that night.

According to evoke.ie, sculptor Bill Rains included a wedding ring on the statue. Brooks has since shared on his website, garthbrooks.com, what she noticed first.

He said that when they pulled the sheet off the statue, the first thing she noticed was the ring.

Right after the unveiling, Brooks got down on one knee in front of 7,000 people. Yearwood tearfully accepted, and the crowd went wild.

Years later, she told Us Weekly how it felt to be on the other end of that question.

“Garth proposed to me and I’m freaking out onstage in front of 7,000 people. But I did say yes,” she said.

The man who once promised to put her on his shows asked her to marry him on a stage, with the whole room watching.

They Married at Home in Owasso, and His Daughters Exchanged Vows Too

Seven months later, on December 10, 2005, Brooks and Yearwood married in a private, low-key ceremony before family at their home in Owasso, Oklahoma. In a statement, Brooks called it the perfect Christmas gift to each other and said they could not be happier. It was his second marriage and her third.

Yearwood has described that day as more than two people saying vows. She told Closer Weekly that Brooks’ three daughters, now grown, had to accept her too, so they got married as a family and all of them exchanged vows.

She told SheKnows in 2021 what that family has meant to her.

“It was a gift that I received from Garth and the girls of having them in a life that I didn’t know I was missing,” she said.

He wrote about what she would bring to his girls, and she talks about what they brought to her.

Plenty of people doubted it would last.

Yearwood told Us Weekly in 2018 that people thought two celebrities in the same business would not last.

She told SheKnows they are not a magical couple and they have their days, but they are best friends. They have now been married for more than 20 years.

Trisha Yearwood Calls Garth Brooks the Love of Her Life

Being married to Garth Brooks followed her onto her own stages. On TODAY, she recalled the early days of the marriage.

She said it was really funny, because when they first got married, every single time she was on stage someone would yell out asking where Garth was, and since she was doing a concert, she got really creative.

Back in the 1980s, he promised to put her on his shows, and years later the crowds at her shows were calling for him.

Brooks has kept Bakersfield close as well. On garthbrooks.com, he explained that once he realized the statue is the place where he proposed to the love of his life, he wanted it brought out to Nashville, in case somebody else might want to propose to their own love in front of it.
