Upon reaching the #1 spot on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles, Dottie West and Kenny Rogers became one of the most popular male-female duos in country music with their hit “Every Time Two Fools Collide.”

The song also topped the US Hot 100 and the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart.

How The Song Was Born

“Every Time Two Fools Collide” was reportedly created because of confusion in Dottie West and Kenny Rogers’s recording schedules.

Rogers and West were under the same label during the time. West’s story told that Rogers arrived early to meet her in the United Artists studio, where she was recording. But according to Rogers, West was supposed to finish her recording session at 10 a.m., and he was to start recording at the said time. He ended up waiting in the studio for her to finish.

Both met and discussed the possibility of recording a duet together, with West suggesting “Every Time Two Fools Collide” and Rogers agreeing.

The song stayed at the top spot in the country chart for two weeks; the track became West’s first #1 and many of Rogers. It was their best-known song and became a classic country duet over time.

In the same year, West and Rogers released an album of the same name as their hit duet song. Their album was Gold-certified by the RIAA, peaking at the #1 spot on the US Billboard Top Country Albums chart.
