Queen of Country Dolly Parton and her duet partner and mentor Porter Wagoner debuted their first No. 1 in the country charts with the single “Please Don’t Stop Loving Me.” If you’re wondering if the song has any link to Elvis Presley’s “Please Don’t Stop Loving Me,” it doesn’t. The duo had their own interpretation of love-yearning.

Parton and Wagoner’s single, originally written by the duo, was released on July 15, 1974. It was the lead single to their eleventh studio album, Porter ‘n’ Dolly. Despite having sixteen country hits together, the song was their only chart-topper as a duet act. It spent one week on top and ten weeks on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles. The song also reached the Canadian RPM Country Tracks at No. 45.

Producer Bob Ferguson assembled the mix with The Lea Jane Singers’ backing vocals.

Meaning Behind the Song

After spending more than seven years as a duo, Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton finally reached the top of the charts with “Please Don’t Stop Loving Me.” They were one of the reigned supreme duos in country music until Parton announced her independence from The Porter Wagoner Show on February 19, 1974 — months before the release of their ballad. One month later, she released “I Will Always Love You” as a farewell song to her business partner.

“Please Don’t Love Me” reiterates the intimacy the singers long for each other. The song tells the story of a love-struck couple who desperately pleads for an unending love that stays in the bleakest of times. The lyrics suggest that when the lover leaves, one of them will languish. Its simplicity and directness convey the unswerving loyalty the singers both desire to receive.

If you have found a lover to be your inspiration, purpose, and the one who brings sunshine in the darkest of days, it would be hard to find another who could give the same amount of security and joy. The singer’s fear of losing their lover demonstrates a passionate, overwhelming, yet enduring love.

Let the melody take you away as Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton perform their iconic duet “Please Don’t Stop Loving Me.”
