On March 13, 2023, Morgan Wallen released “One Thing At A Time” as the title track and third single from his sprawling third studio album.

However, fans first heard of it shortly before Christmas in 2022 as part of the three-song sampler that preceded the album announcement.

Many relate to Wallen’s endless complaints about his struggles with alcoholism and romantic relationships that the song debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart even before its official release.

Meanwhile, in Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, the song soared up (peaking at No. 8) and shared the spotlight with “Last Night” while crossing paths with its predecessor, the hit single “You Proof.”  It helped Wallen achieve a groundbreaking feat as the first solo artist to simultaneously have three songs within the Top 15 spots on the Country Airplay chart.

Meaning Behind The Song

Written by Morgan Wallen with Ashley Gorley, Ernest Keith Smith, and Ryan Vojtesak, “One Thing At A Time” tells the story of a man pouring his heart out after a breakup. Despite giving up bad habits in a desperate bid to salvage their love, his ex-girlfriend still walked away. Erasing her memory seems like an uphill battle, demanding every ounce of his strength as he navigates through the struggle, admitting he’s “only quittin’ one thing at a time.”
