Sometimes even the brightest voices in country music have to take a pause.

Kelly Clarkson, America’s original Idol and one of the most beloved coaches in The Voice history, has returned to her big red chair after briefly stepping away to grieve the loss of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock.

Deadline confirmed that Clarkson, 43, resumed filming season 29 of The Voice on August 19. She’ll be back alongside fellow coaches Adam Levine and John Legend, with Jennifer Hudson having stepped in for her during a single rehearsal episode of the battle rounds. While her absence was short, the reason behind it couldn’t have been heavier.

Brandon Blackstock, Clarkson’s ex-husband and father of her two children, passed away on August 7 at just 48 years old after a private three-year battle with cancer. His death rocked not only Clarkson’s world but also that of her children, River Rose and Remington, and his extended family, which includes country legend Reba McEntire, who was Brandon’s stepmother for over two decades.

The heartbreak has cast a shadow over both The Voice and the country music community. Just days before his death, Clarkson had already postponed performances at her Las Vegas residency, explaining that she needed to focus on family as Brandon’s illness worsened. “While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them,” she wrote in an emotional post. Less than 24 hours later, the tragic news of Brandon’s passing was shared.

It’s no surprise, then, that Clarkson needed a moment to step away. Reports noted that she also canceled her scheduled appearance at the Band Together Texas benefit concert on August 17. But just like the fighter she’s always been, Kelly came back to work, standing tall and showing that even in the middle of heartbreak, her resilience shines through.

Season 29 of The Voice, subtitled “Battle of Champions,” is being filmed alongside season 28, which will premiere in September with Reba, Michael Bublé, Niall Horan, and Snoop Dogg on the coaching panel. Clarkson’s return means fans won’t miss her signature quick wit, motherly warmth, and powerhouse vocals that have helped shape so many contestants’ journeys.

The loss of Blackstock has hit close to home for the entire Voice family. Longtime host Carson Daly shared that everyone on set has been leaning on each other. “We all knew Brandon well, and we are a family,” Daly said. “Everything was fresh, so we’ve just been sending our prayers and support to them. It’s a terrible situation.”

It’s worth remembering that Clarkson and Blackstock shared nearly a decade of marriage, filled with love, music, and raising their children together. Their split in 2020 and subsequent divorce in 2022 made plenty of headlines, but Clarkson has always spoken about prioritizing their kids above all else. Even now, as she returns to her demanding schedule, that same commitment guides her. She is being strong for River and Remy while balancing the weight of her own grief.

Fans of Clarkson know this isn’t the first storm she’s weathered. From career battles to public heartbreaks, she’s built her reputation on being both tough as nails and tender at heart. That’s why her return to The Voice feels more than just business as usual. It’s a statement: Kelly Clarkson may have been knocked down, but she’s far from out.

And if history has taught us anything, it’s that when Kelly Clarkson walks through fire, she comes back with a voice even stronger, a heart even bigger, and a spirit that refuses to dim.
