A lot of people get the best ideas in the shower. However, for Lionel Richie, he thinks somewhere else in the bathroom. Kenny Rogers, his good friend revealed that the “Hello” singer wrote Rogers’ 1980 hit song “Lady” in the Toilet!

“I called Lionel, and I said, ‘I’d like for you to write a song for me,'” Kenny Rogers said. “Lionel doesn’t write entire songs. He writes ideas.”

Sometimes his ideas were unfinished. Kenny Rogers said that Richie had to finish one of his signature songs “Lady”  in the bathroom on the same day that they were recording the song!

“So, we’re in the studio recording the song, and I said, ‘Where’s the second verse?'” he said in an interview. “They said, ‘Lionel’s in the toilet writing it right now.’ I go, ‘What?’ And they said, ‘Yeah, he can’t write unless he has the pressure to write.'”

Incredulous, Bush Hager asked, “And so it was on a piece of toilet paper?”

“Yeah, I don’t know,” Rogers replied, laughing. “I don’t know what it was on. But he went in there to kinda get away from everything, to focus.”

The song was originally pitched by Ritchie to other artists. However, those artists didn’t take the song. The Metro newspaper asked Richie if he’d kept it for himself. He replied, “Just the opposite. When I wrote the song for Kenny, I called my lawyer and said: ‘If I put my voice on this it’s going to be a smash, I want it.’ My lawyer said: ‘If you give it to Kenny, it will be bigger than you ever thought.’ Now, this was true. What I did not realize was that not only did I have my crowd, I picked up all of Kenny’s following too. And that happened to be the rest of the world.”
