It was such a success – the album was actually certified Platinum by the RIAA – that seven years later, Alan Jackson recorded another gospel album, called Precious Memories Volume II. The beloved hymn was written two and a half centuries ago in 1772 by John Newton, who actually penned the lyrics as a poem.
Newton’s life as a rather unfortunate and troubled childhood turned into a slave trader took many twists and turns. Eventually, he entirely abandoned his life at sea, wholeheartedly dedicating his life to God’s service. In 1764, Newton was ordained into the Anglican ministry and came to be exceptionally famous as a preacher and hymn writer. He wrote about 280 hymns, this includes the beloved “Amazing Grace.”
Through the years, a number of noteworthy performers recorded “Amazing Grace.” Just a few of those artists include Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, and Brad Paisley.
