A Song That Transcends Race, Color and Creed is “Amazing Grace”

There are some songs that have the ability to just wrap their arms around you. You may know the lyrics or you may not, but either way when you hear that song you automatically close your eyes and just feel better. You feel at home.

“Amazing Grace” is just one of those songs.

A song that transcends race, color and creed is “Amazing Grace”. Artists ranging from Aretha Franklin to Dropkick Murphy’s and Alan Jackson are among the great names behind this single.

It is impossible not to love Alan Jackson’s voice. He is never shy about his faith. But hearing him sing ‘Amazing Grace’ took our hearts to new heights. We could not help but put our hands up in praise to his version.

Be it a time of need, of passing or of praise, “Amazing Grace” has been the song for hundreds of millions of people all over the world for more than two centuries. Thankfully, we now have Alan Jackson’s version to warm our hearts for many years to come.

The Background of the Song

“Amazing Grace” is a Christian hymn published in 1779. The great mind behind its words came from an English poet and Anglican clergyman John Newton.

Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life’s path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences. These were often put into motion by his disobedient rebelliousness. He was pressed (conscripted) into service in the Royal Navy. After leaving the service, he became involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent storm battered his vessel off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland, so severely that he called out to God for mercy. This moment in his life marked his spiritual conversion. He continued his slave trading career until 1754 or 1755. This was the time when he ended his seafaring altogether and began studying Christian theology.
