Alabama’s “Feels So Right:” A Song That Used To Be Too Intimate For Radio

Despite being deemed as a little suggestive and almost too intimate for radio, Alabama’s “Feels So Right” became a multi-week No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart and even peaked at No. 20 on Billboard Hot 100. Above all, the song – drenched in sexuality – has endured four decades.

“Feels So Right” was released in 1981 as the second single and title track from Alabama‘s album of the same name. It marked the band’s fourth consecutive No. 1 country hit and was also Alabama’s first crossover hit.

With that, the song became the cornerstone of the band’s songs throughout the 1980s to 1990s and is today’s one of Alabama’s greatest hits.

Story Behind The Song

Randy Owen was only seventeen when he wrote “Feels So Right” – who said that he never wrote a song just to be writing it; he needed to have some sort of inspiration. In this case, the inspiration was his then-girlfriend, whom he dated for a couple of years. Owen noted that he put the song together one evening within just fifteen minutes.

He shopped it all over Nashville on many occasions. However, the city’s publishers kept on telling him that it was a great start, yet they noted it needed a bridge. But rather than changing the song to fit in, Owen left it the way it was and held onto it for the next ten years.

Then one night, Owen played the country ballad at The Bowery in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and people seemed to like it. It eventually caught the attention of producer Harold Shedd who suggested that they’d have to record the song right then and there.

To date, Owen considers it to be his very special piece. You can listen to “Feels So Right” by Alabama in the video below.
