In 1965, country legend Loretta Lynn released her calming version of the ultimate hit gospel song “Peace in the Valley” as part of her album, Hymns.

Written by Thomas A. Dorsey, the song was initially released in 1939 by Mahalia Jackson with the title “There’ll Be Peace in the Valley For Me.” Since then, it has become a song many country and gospel singers have come to love covering.

It’s a gospel song that touches the hearts of everyone because of its profound meaning. It gives light to those who lose hope in life. With its great message, many listeners were reminded that as long as they do their best and surrender themselves to God, they’ll eventually feel the peace of the valley—the peace of heaven.

Aside from listeners, the song also touched many artists’ hearts, causing them to release their own versions of the song. Among the most notable renditions was the version of country legend Loretta Lynn. Since it was released in 1965, it has still hit differently—and here’s why.

Compared to the original, Loretta Lynn’s version has a jazzy feel. The lyrics have also changed since Loretta Lynn tried mixing up some of the lyrics from the original and used them as her inspiration in creating her Intro and bridge for her cover.

Aside from that, her distinctive musical style is also quite evident throughout her performance. Since Mahalia has that energetic and powerful voice due to her soprano vocal nature, Loretta Lynn, on the other hand, made the song seem calmer because of her hearty voice. Since many listeners loved it, this rendition instantly became one of Loretta Lynn’s best covers.
