Young Sonny James

James and his family performed on a local radio show. They performed daily in radio shows around Knoxville, Tennessee, and North Carolina, thus making them a big hit.
Hold of his music career
When James joined the National Guard his career was temporarily interrupted. James and other guardsmen were sent to Korea during the Korean conflict in 1950.
His return to music
After his military service in Korea, he moved to Nashville. He reconnected with his old roommate Chet Atkins. Atkins introduced James to Ken Nelson who was an executive at Capitol Records. Thus James signed a deal with Capitol Records.
