Shania Twain once admitted there was a time she couldn’t bring herself to sing the very love song that made her a global icon.

Back in 1997, Shania dropped “You’re Still the One,” a ballad that lit up the charts, won Grammys, and became the gold standard for wedding first dances. But the song wasn’t just a career-defining hit, it was a personal love letter to her then-husband and producer, Robert John “Mutt” Lange. They wrote it together as a middle finger to critics who doubted their relationship. And for years, every time she sang it, she was standing onstage telling the world they were untouchable.

Then the fairytale crashed and burned.

In 2008, Shania’s world blew apart when Lange had an affair with her best friend and assistant, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. The scandal ended their 14-year marriage in one of country music’s ugliest splits. Suddenly, the anthem of undying love turned into a bitter reminder of betrayal. Shania later confessed she couldn’t even get through the song without choking on the memories.

“I’ve gone through quite a few stages with that song,” she told Etalk in an interview first reported by Whiskey Riff. “There was a while when I just didn’t want to sing it live at all. I’d think, well, I’m divorced now, so does it even mean what it used to mean when I wrote it?”

Think about it. Imagine walking into an arena packed with fans who came to hear that song, while all you can picture is the man who cheated on you with your friend. No wonder Shania had to put it on ice for a while. It wasn’t just lyrics anymore, it was salt in a wound.

But Shania Twain didn’t stay down. Over time, she managed to take back the song. Not for Mutt. Not for herself even. For the fans.

“Fans love it, they want to hear it,” she explained. “It means so much to them in so many ways. They’re either getting married to it, or celebrating an anniversary, or they just connect with it in their own lives. It’s the meaning it has for everybody else that makes it so special to me again.”

That’s the power of country music. A song born out of love, tainted by betrayal, can still live on because it belongs to the people now. Couples still sway to it at weddings. Families still make memories to it. And every time Shania steps up to the mic, she knows she’s carrying their stories, not just her own broken past.

Of course, the irony can’t be ignored. The world’s most famous wedding ballad was written by a couple that didn’t make it. The man who helped create the song is long gone, yet the song itself is bigger than ever. That has to sting for him. Meanwhile, Shania is still packing arenas, still cashing the checks, and still proving she’s the one.

For all the scars tied to “You’re Still the One,” Shania now sings it with a new kind of strength. It’s no longer just a love song to a man who betrayed her. It’s a love song to the fans who stood by her, and to the resilience that’s kept her on top for decades.

Mutt might have broken the vows, but Shania’s the one still standing under the spotlight, making the song hers again. That’s country justice.
