Ronnie Milsap, often known as the “Legendary Blind Country Artist,” was unquestionably one of the country’s most well-known artists. He was so dedicated to his craft that he created a great piece of art for his generation and future generations to appreciate.

Despite a dearth of radio broadcasts since the mid-1990s, Milsap has remained one of country music’s most popular and successful musicians. He rose to prominence as one of the most popular and versatile country “crossover” singers of his day, appealing to country and pop music audiences with hit songs that blended pop, R&B, and rock and roll elements.

1. He Is the Third Country Singer with Most Number One Hits

Ronnie Milsap‘s ability and passion for his art are undeniable. As a consequence of his hard work and skill in making his music liked by everyone, the bulk of his songs, roughly 35 of them, were deemed number-one country singles, ranking him third among country singers with the most number-one hits, trailing country superstars George Strait and Conway Twitty.

2. He Has a Congenital Disorder

For those who don’t know, Ronnie Milsap was born in Robbinsville, North Carolina, with congenital glaucoma, which rendered him practically blind at birth. Despite this, he was able to fulfill his ambition of becoming a musician.

3. Ronnie Milsap is So Good at Mixing Genres

Ronnie Milsap has long been considered one of, if not the only, country singers who can combine country and soul so gracefully that it can frequently appeal to a mainstream audience, and guess what? It did. As a result, he is one of the most well-known crossover artists of all time.

4. His Mother Abandoned Him When He Was Still a Child

Because of his condition and nearly being born blind, compared to other moms, Ronnie Milsap’s mother saw this as God punishing her for her sins. Thus, she left baby Ronnie with his grandparents rather than caring for him herself.

5. He Studied at the School for The Blind

Milsap was transferred to Raleigh’s Governor Morehead School for the Blind when he was five. He developed a profound love of music via attentive listening to radio broadcasts. And that’s how legendary country musician Ronnie Milsap was born.  

6. He Was Planning to Be a Lawyer

Milsap received a full college scholarship and temporarily attended Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia, with the intention of becoming a lawyer. However, in 1964, he refused the scholarship and dropped out of college to pursue a full-time career in music.

7. He Once Formed a Rock and Roll Band

With Elvis Presley‘s national breakthrough in 1956, Milsap, like other music fans, got interested in rock and roll music to the point where he decided to start his own rock band, the Apparitions, with fellow high-school classmates.

8. He Is Now an Amateur Radio Operator 

Ronnie Milsap is a man of many talents. And due to his appealing voice, he is now an Advanced-class amateur radio operator with a call sign of WB4KCG.

9. He Was a Man of Multiple Awards

He received several awards, including one of his most well-known, the Grammy award, for his chart-topping interpretation of Kris Kristofferson’s “Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends.” He was also named ACM’s 1982 Top Male Vocalist. 10. Ronnie Milsap Released a New Album in 2021

Milsap is still relevant till present, despite having been in the industry for so long since he opted to release a new album called A Better Word for Love in 2021. An interesting tidbit about this CD is that it was recorded at Ronnie’s Place.
