The Blackstock family is hurting, and Shelby Blackstock isn’t sugarcoating it.
One day after the news broke that his older brother, Brandon Blackstock, died at 48 after more than three years fighting cancer, Shelby took to Instagram to let the world know exactly what his brother meant to him and that the loss cuts deep.
“Words cannot begin to capture the tremendous loss our family has endured,” Shelby wrote. “Yesterday, we lost a brother, a father, a grandfather, and a son. Brandon Blackstock was an irreplaceable part of our family, funny, bright, and full of life, and he will be deeply missed.”

If you know the Blackstock clan, you know they aren’t just the “family photo at Christmas” type. Brandon and Shelby shared a dad, Narvel Blackstock, but built their bond on shared hunts, flights, rodeos, and a lifetime of one-upping each other. Shelby made sure to sneak that in.
“For every treasured moment we shared, there are so many more we’ll never get to make together, but I know you’ll still be there,” he wrote. “Every hunt, every flight, and in the everyday moments of life, I’ll feel your presence. And although it may annoy you, you’ll have to watch me do it all just a little better, a little smoother, and let’s be honest, looking far more handsome than you ever could in the process.”
That’s not Hallmark talk. That’s brothers, right there.

Shelby’s post wasn’t just words. He dropped a string of photos that tell the story themselves, including Brandon in the saddle at the Valley View Rodeo he founded in 2023, the two of them hugging it out on a boat with beers in hand, family shots with their dad, and a March 2025 Houston Rodeo gathering that brought together Reba, Shelby, Brandon, and the next generation of Blackstocks.
That Houston trip now feels heavier. Brandon was there with his kids, Savannah and Seth from his first marriage, and River and Remington with his ex-wife Kelly Clarkson, grinning under a black cowboy hat like nothing could slow him down. But by then, he’d already been in the fight of his life.
The cancer battle stayed private. Out of respect for her kids and the family, Clarkson didn’t speak about it until the very end, even postponing her Las Vegas residency just a day before his death to be with River and Remy.
Brandon’s death hit a family with deep country roots. Narvel was Reba’s husband for 26 years, managing her career and helping run Starstruck Entertainment. Shelby is their son. Brandon carved his own lane in the music business, managing Blake Shelton for years and marrying Clarkson in 2013. That marriage ended in 2022 after a long, messy split, but everyone close to them says Clarkson worked to keep things civil for the kids.

On August 7, the Blackstocks confirmed what those closest to them already knew, that Brandon’s fight was over. “Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family,” the statement read.
Shelby’s tribute made it clear that his brother’s absence is going to be felt everywhere, in the stands at the rodeo, in the woods on a hunt, in the sky on a flight. And he wasn’t afraid to throw in that little brother jab, because that’s the kind of stuff you don’t stop doing, even when the other guy’s not around to fire back.
“We will always miss you, Brandon, and we will never stop loving, remembering and celebrating you,” Shelby wrote.
That’s about as real as it gets. Love, loss, and just enough trash talk to make sure the memories keep a smile on them.
