Two country spitfires entered the world on this day in 1964, and the genre’s never been the same.

Loretta Lynn, already a force to be reckoned with in Nashville, had no idea she was about to give birth to twins when she walked into that Kentucky hospital. It was Dr. Hasty’s first delivery ever. Most new moms might’ve panicked, but not Loretta. She told him not to worry because this wasn’t her first rodeo. But even a veteran like Loretta was caught off guard when she delivered Peggy Jean and then heard the words, “Looks like there’s another.”

Her reaction? “Leave it in there!” That was her exact response, according to a story she told on her website back in 2022. But of course, Patsy Eileen soon followed, healthy as could be, and just like that, country music had two more Lynns. Loretta, already a mother many times over, was floored. Shocked. Exhausted. And probably wondering how in the hell she was going to wrangle two more.

What came next was a beautiful chaos, the kind only Loretta Lynn could make sound like poetry. Her housekeeper Gloria stepped in like a second mama. Their daddy, Doo, was completely wrapped around their little fingers. And those twins? Always up to something. Loretta once sang, “Oh gee, I hope it ain’t twins again” in her 1971 hit “One’s On The Way.” You better believe those girls gave her grief for that line.

As they grew up, Peggy and Patsy weren’t just riding the coattails of their mama’s fame. They were soaking up every minute of that musical bloodline. In the late ’90s, the two launched their own duo, The Lynns. And they had it. The look, the sound, the harmonies. They charted singles, got nominated for CMA Vocal Duo of the Year in both 1998 and 1999, and made their mama proud as hell. Loretta said herself, “I wasn’t surprised. I always knew they could sing.” She said it with that signature Lynn bluntness that doesn’t sugarcoat for anyone, especially not family.

But as the years rolled on, life shifted. Peggy became a master gardener, turning her land into something out of a country daydream. Patsy moved behind the curtain and built a whole second act as a producer and songwriter. She’s also been instrumental in keeping Loretta’s legacy moving forward. And above all, they both became incredible mothers.

Loretta never hid the fact that she missed out on moments when they were little. She was chasing dreams on the road and building one of the greatest careers in country music history. But the beautiful part of her story is how that time came back around. As grown women, Peggy and Patsy joined their mama on the road, shared stages, shared miles, and shared memories. Loretta said they became the best of friends. When they holler through the door, she feels like a kid again.

And that right there is country gold. A woman who gave everything to her music gained it all back in her daughters. From cribs in the tour bus to making their own mark in Nashville, Peggy and Patsy Lynn are more than twins. They’re country royalty, born on this day, with a fire that still burns.
