Kelly Clarkson’s Divorce Was About More Than ‘Irreconcilable Differences,’ Per Insider Report

Kelly Clarkson’s split from Brandon Blackstock was painted in court papers as just “irreconcilable differences,” but folks close to the situation say that’s only scratching the surface.

When Kelly filed for divorce in June 2020, most headlines framed it as a lockdown breakup, two people quarantining together in Montana, realizing their marriage had run its course. But insiders now say there was a lot more behind the curtain. “He was a great father, but wasn’t a great husband,” one source told the Daily Mail. They claim there was a “point of no return” that made Kelly finally pull the plug, and the final blow was something she never saw coming.

That “final blow” was Brandon’s relationship with Brittney Marie Jones, her former production assistant. According to LinkedIn records, Brittney worked for Kelly from 2016 to 2018, handling tour logistics and day-to-day production duties. By late 2018, she had switched over to working directly for Brandon as his executive management assistant, still coordinating Kelly’s schedule. And in June 2020, the same month Kelly filed for divorce, Brittney moved into a role as executive assistant at V Bar B Cattle Co., Brandon’s Montana ranch. That is also the month she reportedly moved to Montana with him full-time.

For Kelly, insiders say, this was not just a matter of another woman being in the picture, it was the betrayal of trust. Brittney had been part of her inner circle, someone she worked alongside during her marriage. A Daily Mail source said Brandon’s decision to move on with someone Kelly knew “was just the icing on the cake of the disappointment she felt over the delusion of their marriage.”

Their divorce did not just play out emotionally, it was a legal and financial slugfest. Clarkson won primary custody of their two kids, River and Remington, in November 2020, with court documents noting a “level of conflict” that made co-parenting difficult. She was ordered to pay Brandon around $150,000 a month in spousal support plus child support, but she later turned the tables with a bombshell lawsuit. Kelly accused Brandon of overcharging her and unlawfully procuring business deals while serving as her manager. Among the claims was that he told her she was not “sexy” enough to be a judge on The Voice. In 2023, an arbitrator ruled in her favor, ordering Brandon to pay her $2.6 million.

Still, for all the bad blood in court, those close to Kelly say she never trashed Brandon in front of the kids. She wanted River and Remy to have the best possible relationship with their dad. In fact, when Brandon’s health began failing, Kelly quietly scaled back work to be present for their children during his illness. She even postponed her Las Vegas residency shows the day before his death, explaining she needed to be “fully present” for them.

Brandon passed away on August 7, 2025, after a three-year battle with melanoma. His obituary did not mention Kelly, but it did publicly acknowledge Brittney as his “beautiful and loving partner in life and business.” Together, they built Headwaters Livestock Auction and The Valley View Rodeo in Bozeman, Montana, a legacy his family says will live on.

Kelly has not publicly addressed his passing. But by all accounts, she is holding it together for the kids, heartbroken for their loss while carrying the weight of a marriage that ended with more than just “irreconcilable differences.”
