The Best Morgan Wallen Songs That Made Him New Artist of the Year

Here are some of Morgan Wallen songs that helped the country star clinch the title of CMA New Artist of the Year during the 54th Annual CMA Awards.

Morgan Wallen has indeed gone through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows since he released his debut single in 2016. While he is still riding high from the release of his sophomore album, Dangerous: The Double Album, Wallen has found himself in hot water once again – turning his career upside down.

With that, let’s look back to some of his songs that helped the country star’s career skyrocketed despite his turbulent personal life-dominating headlines.

1. “Chasin’ You”

“Chasin’ You” was one of the first songs Morgan Wallen wrote after arriving in Nashville from his small town in Tennessee. “I knew that I could sing, but I didn’t have a clue if I could write songs,” he said. “‘Chasin’ You’ really propelled me and gave me a lot of confidence that I might be able to do it.”

It was then released in 2019 as the fourth single off his studio album, If I Know Me, and it went on to be Wallen’s third consecutive No. 1 hit on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.

Wallen wrote the song – which tells the tale of a man who never gives up on finding the perfect partner and instead chose to chase them down – because of the things he was going through at that time. “It kind of helped me get through it,” he said. “So it’s cool to be able to hear a real story of mine on the radio.”

2. “Cover Me Up”

“Cover Me Up” has been Jason Isbell’s signature song, and he has played it nearly every time he’s taken the stage since 2013. So, when Morgan Wallen chose to cover the song, there’s been a debate that appeared to rage on Twitter, especially for fans who find it hard to accept anyone covering the chill-inducing love song.

Wallen then emphatically let fans know how he feels about it. “It’s a song as long as I’m able to sing, I’m gonna sing it,” he said.

3. “Whiskey Glasses”

Morgan Wallen describes the aftereffect of heartbreak in “Whiskey Glasses,” wherein alcohol becomes the only choice left for a person to move on and forget. At the chorus, Wallen added backing vocals in Florida Georgia Line’s style – giving the song a subtle pop.

It was then released in 2018 as the third single off his debut album If I Know Me. It became his first country chart-topper when it climbed to No. 1.

4. “Up Down”

When Morgan Wallen released his collaboration with Florida Georgia Line, “Up Down,” it became an irresistible country hit. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart and No. 5 on the Hot Country Songs chart.

It also achieved the same chart success in Canada, reaching No. 1 on the Canada Country chart.

“It’s almost a whole lifestyle embodiment of this redneck, good timing guy. We wanted to have a fun song that people would be on a boat drinking beer and want to put this song on,” CJ Solar, one of the songwriters, said.

5. “The Way I Talk”

Morgan Wallen gained speed on country radio with his debut single “The Way I Talk,” a song about his thick country accent.

“Even though the majority of the writers on the song didn’t know me, it seems like they wrote it for me, the things that I’m proud of and the way that I live,” Wallen said. “And it was just a perfect match to me.”

6. “Little Rain”

The Tennessee native reminds his listeners to slow down and enjoy the time you spend with your significant other in the sultry song, “Little Rain.” Sometimes, you could use a little rain to pick up on things you’ve been missing.

7. “More Than My Hometown”

“More Than My Hometown” is the lead-off single from his second studio album, Dangerous: The Double Album, which is thirty songs in length.

The song’s bittersweet storyline caught the attention of radio fans, as expected. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard US Country Airplay and No. 2 on Billboard US Hot Country Songs.

8. “Somebody’s Problem”

When Morgan Wallen stumbled upon “Somebody’s Problem,” it became part of the country star’s latest success.

The song is actually the last one Wallen has written for Dangerous: The Double Album. It barely made it to the record, but the country star loved it so much he found a way to squeeze the track in at the last minute.

9. “7 Summers”

Morgan Wallen finds himself thinking back about a love that just won’t fade in “7 Summers.” No matter how much time has passed by, the moments he had with his old flame are still all too vivid even though it has already been seven summers ago.

Wallen once revealed that he almost didn’t release the song. But thanks to the upswell of support on social media, the hitmaker changed his mind.

“I saw how much the song was getting played and how much people were enjoying it, even just the first verse and chorus. Social media played a huge part in me releasing this song,” the singer said. “I think that speaks to just how much fans mean to me and fans mean to music. I’m glad I’m getting to put it out and glad people are loving it. I can’t wait for y’all to hear the full version.”

10. “Heartless”

Morgan Wallen added his acid-washed vocal to the EDM crossover with Diplo, sharing the smooth-burning track “Heartless.”

The song is actually a part of Diplo’s first “country project,” where he joined forces with several different artists. Wallen opened up about working with the superstar DJ. “I think Diplo is a true global artist,” he said. “I feel that he is exposing country artists to his global reach, and that’s something that is rarely done in our genre.”
