Morgan Wallen has made another record-breaking run with the debut of his heartbreak ballad, “Wasted On You.” The song debuted early in 2021 as part of the acoustic set released on YouTube before the release of his album, Dangerous: The Double Album.

The track became an immediate fan favorite that, in fact, it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart – making Wallen the first artist to enjoy multiple debuts atop the tally. But not only that, the song ranked on the chart alongside his other tracks – making him the first-ever to simultaneously rank six songs within the top 10 of the said chart.

Moreover, “Wasted On You” was a crossover hit for Wallen as it reached No. 9 on Billboard Hot 100. It was then officially released to country radio in 2022 as the fourth single off his album, Dangerous: The Double Album.

The Story Behind The Song

Morgan Wallen co-wrote “Wasted On You” with Ryan Vojtesak, Ernest K. Smith, and Josh Thompson, which finds him singing from the standpoint of a man grieving for the time, money, and miles he wasted on a relationship – only to end up failing. The slow-burning track also takes on a double meaning as Wallen sings about drinking away his pain and sorrow – hence, becoming wasted on his former lover.

During one episode of Ernest’s podcast, Just Being Ernest, the East Tennessee native revealed that the whiskey-soaked anthem always felt special to him. He went on to reveal that he and his co-writers actually wrote the song in his kitchen – while enjoying a bourbon, of course – during the quarantine amidst the pandemic.

Now, Wallen is in the midst of his sold-out headlining trek, The Dangerous Tour – which kicked off with a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. The massive 54-date tour will run through October.
