Written by Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally, and Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart” tells the tale of a woman who starts misbehaving as she struggles with the immediate aftermath of a breakup.

People started to notice her behavior, and her mother found out about her shenanigans, who rebuked her and told her to regain her composure. Instead, the woman chose to sacrifice her “spotless reputation” just to get the revenge she needs. She takes the matter into her own hands – after all, “this ain’t my mama’s broken heart,” she said.

Miranda Lambert admits that she quickly fell in love with the song as it’s about how someone can sometimes go a little bit crazy when they get their heart broken – whether it’s drinking too much, smoking too much, cutting your hair, or finding a rebound until your mother will have to slap you around to straighten you up.

Indeed, this is one of Miranda Lambert’s songs that are fiery revenge-laden – well, she’s known to be notorious for such a country staple.

Kacey Musgraves also sang harmony on the song.

Did you know “Mama’s Broken Heart” was never pitched to Lambert? Luckily, during the rehearsal dinner for her wedding to her then-husband, Blake Shelton, Musgraves was there with her sister, who took Lambert and Shelton’s wedding photos.

Musgraves and Lambert knew each other for quite some time, and they’ve written several songs together. So the country superstar went over Musgraves and asked her if she can have the song – to which Musgraves agreed as long as she can sing harmony.

The song peaked at No. 2 on both Billboard’s Hot Country Song and Billboard’s Country Airplay. It also took home the Single Record of the Year during the 2014 ACM Awards.
