In 2014, Carrie Underwood made a big wave with her Greatest Hits: Decade #1 album’s lead single, “Something in the Water.” Rolling Stone described the song as a “spiritual heartstring-tugger,” while Billboard praised it for delivering a powerful message of faith in troubled times. Of course, Underwood’s heavenly vocals were also a highlight.

That critical acclaim translated to chart success, dominating the Billboard Hot Country Songs for seven weeks and Hot Christian Songs for 26. It also broke into the Top 30 of Billboard Hot 100. Last but not least, the song also earned Underwood a Grammy Award (the seventh in her career) for Best Solo Country Performance.

Meaning Behind the Song

“Something in the Water” was co-written by Carrie Underwood with Chris DeStefano and Brett James under the singer’s longtime producer Mark Bright. The song was a deeply spiritual journey themed around a man whose life has changed after getting baptized.

In an interview with Bart Herbison of Nashville Songwriters Association International, DeStefano shared that he had already prepared tracks before meeting with Underwood and James at the singer’s cabin. Of course, just like in any session, he already prefaced with an apology in case they didn’t like it.

As soon as he played that piece in particular, Underwood was immediately into it. James also had a similar reaction. She then started singing melodies (some of them made the final cut) and knew exactly what she wanted to say in the lyrics.

The concept had been sitting in her mind for quite some time, and she had been really wanting to write it. Hence, it was a quick write that only took a few hours.

The “Amazing Grace” refrain at the end, which everyone absolutely loved, was actually the Underwood’s idea. They were right at the finish line and just listening to the recording when they heard her singing the song in the background. It just hit perfectly, and they added it as a refrain.

Throughout the process, DeStefano expressed how he felt absolute forces bigger than them working and blessing them in that room that day. He was sure that both of his co-writers could attest to that. It was definitely a special moment, and they all cried that day.
