“Aside from his smooth, effortless vocal style, his greatest talent was recognizing a great song when he heard it,” Calvin Gilbert of CMT said of Ray Price. And it was absolutely true. Price had an incredible music repertoire of covers, including one of his prime hits titled “Release Me.”

The song was written by Eddie Miller, Dub Williams, and Robert Yount in 1949, and it was first recorded by Miller himself. Unfortunately, it was without much success. The track sat on the shelf for years before it was picked up by Jimmy Heap & the Melody Makers, a swing band, in 1954 and catapulted it into the Top 10. Price followed in the same year, releasing it as a single and earning another Top 10 hit achievement for the song.

The rendition became a classic in the genre and an iconic track in Ray Price’s discography

Meaning Behind the Song

“Release Me” is a classic country ballad, with its lyrics exploring the theme of heartbreak and longing by depicting a person trapped in a relationship that has lost its passion and meaning.

The person begs their partner that they let go of each other from their tragic situation, move on, and find happiness elsewhere. Throughout the song, the person expresses the somber realization that there is no longer hope in making things work and that their only option is a fresh start. To save the person and their partner, they must release each other, and only then will they find solace and fulfillment.

The person’s plea featured in the chorus, “Release me, and let me love again,” encapsulates the central theme of the song – the desire for freedom from the emotional burden of a failing relationship.

As for the sound, the track is characterized by a simple yet haunting melody, with Ray Price’s signature “shuffle” beat, created by his band, the Cherokee Cowboys, as a prominent feature of the song. His delivery was particularly poignant, with his rich, emotive vocals perfectly conveying the anguish and longing.

His rendition’s success inspired various artists to produce their interpretations of the song. The most successful one was Engelbert Humperdinck’s rendition, which brought their unique style to the song and made it number one, further cementing its status as a timeless classic.
