We all have experienced huge milestones, small wins, or terrible failures – but one thing is for sure, the only way to live is if we grow. So, without further ado, here are some of the best coming-of-age songs to give us back a sense of days gone by.

1. “Young” by Kenny Chesney

Released as the lead single off his 2002 album No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems, “Young” finds Chesney reminiscing about his teenage years. From being awkward and shy to being wanna-be rebels to wishing he was older – it’s absolutely things we are all familiar with.

2. “The Best Day” by George Strait

Watching our kids grow up is truly a bittersweet moment, and Strait knows how it feels as he sings about the joys of fatherhood in “The Best Day.” The heartwarming ballad tells the story of a father who ponders about the different stages of his son’s life – from being a young man to becoming a teenager and eventually marrying the woman he loves.

3. “There Goes My Life” by Kenny Chesney

This poignant ballad actually spent seven consecutive weeks atop the Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. “There Goes My Life” tells the story of a teenage boy whose dreams came crashing when he knew his girlfriend was pregnant. But in the end, he realized that it was all worth it.

4. “Boy” by Lee Brice

Brice decided to release “Boy” as the lead single to his self-titled fourth studio album after he noticed concertgoers holding up photos of their sons whenever he sang the song. Indeed, the country ballad connects with every parent who’s watching their kids grow up too fast right before their eyes.

5. “Concrete Angel” by Martina McBride

This powerful ballad, “Concrete Angel,” centers on the story of a young girl who endured abuse at her grandmother’s hands. Sadly, the little girl eventually died, but she went onto the afterlife, where she is loved more than she ever was.

6. “The Coat of Many Colors” by Dolly Parton

This country song basically tells Parton’s earlier years – like how her mother would stitch together a coat for her daughter using rags they’ve received from their friends. “The Coat of Many Colors” was inspired by the stories told by Parton’s mother about Joseph and his Coat of Many Colors.

7. “Then They Do” by Trace Adkins

Adkins gave us one of the most heartening country ballads about children and families – and that’s “Then They Do,” which tells the story of a father watching his kids growing up. You’ll get to see how the trouble-causing kids turned out to be adults who have accomplished their dreams.

8. “Rebecca Lynn” by Brian White

The country ballad tells the story of a boy who fell in love with Rebecca Lynn in second grade. It follows the times the two spent together – from their elementary school days to joining the prom and finally, marrying each other and having a child of their own.

9. “My Little Girl” by Tim McGraw

McGraw has always been a proud father to his three gorgeous daughters, so no one could relate to this song as much as the country superstar. The heartwarming ballad finds McGraw telling his daughter that she will forever be his little girl even though she is growing up.

10. “Letter to Me” by Brad Paisley

Paisley wrote the “Letter to Me” after his wife asked him to write a book of letters for his younger self. He turned it into a song wherein he reflects on his youth. With all the different teenage experiences he went through, he realized that he’s now much wiser.

11. “Remember You Young” by Thomas Rhett

Rhett’s “Remember You Young” conveys a nostalgic theme and contains references to events from his past. The country singer noted that they wrote the song for the people in their lives and how they will always be remembered no matter how much time passes by.

12. “Don’t Blink” by Kenny Chesney

The song was one of the fastest-rising singles in Chesney’s career. It tells the story of a younger man who saw a 102-year-old man’s news interview, who was asked what’s his secret to life. The old man’s response was, “Don’t blink.”

13. “It Won’t Be Like This for Long” by Darius Rucker

The mid-tempo ballad follows a couple whose life changed the moment they welcomed their newborn daughter. It then chronicles how the little girl grew up, and the father realized how he would no longer be able to observe her much.

14. “The House That Built Me” by Miranda Lambert

The first time Lambert heard the song, she immediately emotionally reacted to it and wanted to record it right then and there. It turned out to be her fastest-rising single and earned her a Grammy Award.

It finds Lambert returning to the old house she grew up in.

15. “You’re Gonna Miss This” by Trace Adkins

Adkins’ 2008 country hit features three verses – each portrays an event of a woman’s life. It chronicles from the time she was a young student to owning her own apartment to having kids of her own.
