She Left Country Music, Called It Cold and Political, and Now Maren Morris Still Wants In

Maren Morris in a sparkling pink gown with dramatic deep V-neck and silver embellishments, as she slams country music as cold and political but now hints at wanting back in after stepping away.

She left country music and slammed the door behind her, but now Maren Morris is knocking like nothing happened.

In case you missed it, Morris has made a name for herself in the last few years not just for her music but also for throwing shade at the genre that gave her a stage in the first place. She once stood on the shoulders of country greats to grab a Grammy with her breakout hit, “My Church” in 2016. Now, nearly a decade later, she is crying foul about the same industry that helped launch her.

In a recent TikTok video, Morris got candid about how she feels country music has changed, saying it is very politicized and not very friendly. She called it heartbreaking to be a woman in the genre and explained how she has pulled back from awards shows and the Nashville scene because, as she puts it, the room has gotten too hot.

But let us rewind.

This is not just a story of someone outgrowing a scene. This is about someone cashing in their chips, walking out, and then trying to circle back when it suits them. Back in 2023, she proudly announced she was stepping away from country music and released her EP titled ‘The Bridge’ as a so-called farewell to the genre. In interviews, she said she was done trying to fit into a space she felt no longer reflected her values.

And it was not just a quiet exit. Morris made headlines for calling the genre toxic, accused her peers of being complicit in bigotry, and openly distanced herself from country music fans who did not align with her political views. She framed the entire genre as being behind the times and filled with people who made her feel put off. To be clear, she was not just criticizing a few folks because she was dragging the whole genre through the mud.

Now here we are, and suddenly she is singing a different tune.

Despite the dramatic exit, Morris says she still loves country music, her Texas roots, and the city of Nashville. She claims she is not totally out and that she just needed some space. She still wants to write songs and maybe show up here and there, just not too close to the spotlight she once shared with the artists she now seems to want distance from.

But Country music fans do not forget. This genre is built on loyalty, tradition, and truth-telling. You do not get to ride the wave when it suits you, then drag the whole thing through the dirt, and expect a red carpet rolled back out when the dust settles.

Plenty of women in country music have fought for space, respect, and recognition without ever needing to bad-mouth the genre or the fans. They did it with grit, not guilt trips.

Maren might say her critiques came from a place of honesty, and maybe they did. But you cannot spit on the fire and expect it to warm you later.

If she wants back in, that is her right to try. But let us not pretend the boots she threw off in disgust get to be laced back up like nothing happened. Country music may have its flaws and what industry does not, but it also has a backbone. And right now, it is standing tall.
