One of Rosanne Cash’s best songs can be traced back to her prime in the 80s. An American singer-songwriter and a soul-searching author, Cash has released songs that made her among the pioneers of contemporary country. Her hit single “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me” was released in February 1985 under Columbia Records. It was the second track to her fifth studio album, Rhythm & Romance, that won her first Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Female.

Ironically enough, she wrote the song with former husband Rodney Crowell as a response to losing a Grammy two years earlier to Juice Newton. It soared to No. 16 on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary and No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs for a week, making it her fourth song to top the charts.

Cash’s innovative lyricism and layers of expressive instrumentals led her to become one of the most well-respected artists in the music industry. Although her music was categorized under country music, her soulful tone set her apart from her peers by adding rock and pop arrangements into her material.

Meaning Behind the Song

When Rosanne Cash released “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me” in 1985, she was unstoppable, releasing hits after hits. But it was also a time where her marriage with husband-producer Rodney Crowell was unraveling while she was blossoming into the spotlight. For someone who didn’t want to be a singer, her star power is too strong to go unnoticed, especially after releasing her fourth chart-topping hit.

The song brings out a bright sound with a perfect mix of genres from pop, rock, and country. Waddy Wachtel’s guitar playing and Vince Gill’s backing vocals on the chorus blend in flawlessly to Cash’s vocals. It defied the typical sound of country that made her a prominent name in the music industry.

Her lyrics were creative yet transparent, showing a painful plea for an unrequited love. Although it was a response to her loss in the 1986 Grammys, it can be interpreted as an allegory of love. No matter how hard she tried to present herself attractively — from her face, shoes, and dress — she still couldn’t get the man she wanted. This is proof that you can’t win everything with good looks and a positive attitude if there is no genuine love from the one you desire.

Sometimes, love can make you feel like a fool, and having a love unrequited makes you terribly awful, as though you were wrapped with clouds of confusion. So, sing along to Rosanne Cash’s “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me” and let all those feelings out.
