There was never anything fake about the way Reba McEntire loves her people.

Two months after the heartbreaking passing of her former stepson, Brandon Blackstock, Reba is finally speaking out, and in true Reba fashion, she did not hold anything back. The “Fancy” icon opened up about the loss with a raw kind of honesty that hits straight in the gut and reminds us all why she is one of the realest voices in country music, both on and off the stage.

Brandon, the son of Reba’s ex-husband Narvel Blackstock, passed away on August 7 at just 48 years old after a battle with melanoma. The news rocked fans who knew him not just as Kelly Clarkson’s ex-husband, but as a music industry insider and father of four. For Reba, though, this wasn’t some distant family tie. This was her kid.

“My relationship with my stepson, Brandon Blackstock, was precious,” Reba told People. “I absolutely loved that child. He came into my life, I guess he was four years old. Then when Narvel and I got married, he was 13 or 14.”

She did not just talk about him like a memory. She painted a picture. One of a mischievous, funny, joy-filled man who never missed a chance to pull a prank or catch someone off guard just for a laugh. Reba McEntire recalled him sneaking around the Starstruck offices in Nashville, hiding behind pillars just to scare staff walking by. “Brandon is sorely missed, truly missed with his mischievousness and his love of life,” she said. “He brought joy to everybody that met him, and we’ll never forget him.”

The country legend made it clear this loss cut deep. Reba helped raise Brandon alongside his siblings, Shawna and Chassidy, and always treated him like her own. Even after her divorce from Narvel in 2015, her bond with Brandon remained strong. She once called him her son, not just her stepson, and it is clear she meant every word.

Brandon’s passing was publicly confirmed in early August with a statement from the family. It revealed that he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, following a private but courageous three-year battle with cancer. Reba shared her own personal tribute days later on Instagram, writing, “His struggle is over and he is in eternal peace in God’s presence. There is no one else like him, and I’m thankful for the time we had together. Rest in peace cowboy. Happy trails to you til we meet again.”

What makes this moment even heavier is knowing that this loss came not long after Brandon’s highly publicized split from Clarkson. The divorce made headlines for years, but in the end, what remained was Brandon’s role as a father, a son, and a man who clearly meant the world to the people closest to him.

Kelly, for her part, kept things private. But just one day before Brandon’s death was announced, she postponed several shows, saying she needed to be fully present for her children. That silent gesture said more than any press release could.

At 70 years old, Reba has lived more life than most and carried more heartbreak than she lets the spotlight see. But every now and then, that curtain lifts, and you catch a glimpse of the woman behind the legend. In this case, she showed the world that love doesn’t fade with a breakup or even death. When she says someone is family, they stay that way.

Brandon Blackstock may be gone, but in Reba’s world, he is anything but forgotten.
