Randy Travis is one of the most successful country music stars in the 1980s and 1990s’. He has sold over 25 million albums, earned seven Grammy Awards, and toured all over the world.

In 2015, the country superstar surprised everyone when he secretly married Mary Davis – the woman who stood by her side through a long list of woes. Davis has been with Randy Travis beginning from his legal problems in 2012 to his debilitating stroke in 2013.

Let’s get to know more about Mary Davis and her love story with the “Forever and Ever, Amen” singer.

She was Married Before

Mary Davis was previously married to Dr. Ritchie Beougher, a Dallas cosmetic dentist. She used to work at the Willow Bend Dental office as her then-husband’s office manager too. Davis and Ritchie have two children: daughter Cavenaugh and son Raleigh Beougher.

She Petitioned to Block Singer’s 2012 Arrest Video

In 2017, Davis started a petition to block the impending public release of potentially embarrassing dashboard camera footage from the country legend’s DUI arrest in Tioga, Texas, in 2012.

Mary Davis shared the petition, which has been posted at Change.org and said, “We were told by the Judge in Grayson County that the video would be destroyed after Randy completed all requirements handed down by the Judge. Randy completed all requirements in a very timely fashion, only to be told by the Attorney General’s office that the Judge didn’t have the authority!”

When Randy Travis was originally arrested about 60 miles north of his Dallas home, he crashed his car, suffered a concussion and other injuries. The Department of Public Safety officers reportedly discovered Travis naked and lying in the road.

Three and a half months after Randy Travis suffered a massive stroke, the doctors advised Mary Davis to consider “pulling the plug” on the singer as there was no longer they could do to help him.

Davis asked Travis if he wanted to keep fighting in a partial comatose state. “Even in his state, his semi-coma state, he squeezed my hand,” Davis said about her husband’s time on life support.” And he laid there, and I just I saw this tear just fell. And it was, you know, one, two at a time. And I just went back to the doctors, and I said, ‘we’re fighting this.”’

They Married in an Emotional Ceremony

Two years after Randy Travis’ stroke, the couple married in an emotional ceremony. “One of my favorite songs of his is called ‘Are We in Trouble Now?’ and it is a beautiful love song,” she said. “It was one that he was gonna sing to me at the wedding, but we play it all the time and we kind of hold hands and cry.”

Travis endured brain surgery and had spent six months in the hospital after coming out of his coma. However, the near-fatal stroke had damaged his system. Thanks to Davis’s help and physical therapy, the singer learned to speak and walk again. Davis said the experience had taught them a lot about love, perseverance, and patience

“You learn to love each other and adore each other in a way that was far beyond what you thought was possible. So we learned a lot about love. There wasn’t anything that I feel like was going to tear us apart,” she said.

“As much as I already loved this man, going through those six months in the hospital, it was just an adoration for his fight, a love for that fight, and a respect for the warrior that was in there in his heart.”

She Speaks in Behalf of Randy Travis

Since Randy Travis still struggles to form words, Mary Davis has always spoken on his behalf. Even when Travis was inducted as the new member of The Country Music Hall of Fame, Davis delivered the country legend’s acceptance speech for him.

“Today is the greatest day of Randy’s celebrated music career,” she said. “Randy wants to thank you for listening and loving him. Randy stared death in the face, but death blinked. Today, God’s proof of a miracle stands before you.”

“Tonight, I want to give back to the voice of Randy Travis. If you’ll stand …”

Randy Travis is Her Angel

To Mary Davis, the singer is her warrior and angel. “When you go through life, and you have someone that is so dear to you that can tell you every day how much that they love you and how special you are, how pretty you are — thank you for this, thank you for that — you take that for granted,” she said. “It’s one of those things I often tell people, I say ‘Listen fast, talk slow.’ I wish I’d listened faster to his stories because he has so many great stories.”

Randy Travis and Mary Davis have known each other for almost 30 years but didn’t become romantic until their respective marriages were falling apart.
