In 1963, Johnny Tillotson released his rendition of country legend Ernest Ashworth’s number-one hit song “Talk Back Trembling Lips” as part of his album of the same title. Even though his cover did not enter the Country Chart, it still reached the US Adult Contemporary (Billboard) charts, landing at the no. 6 spot, and in the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at no. 7.

First recorded in 1963, the song was said to have been influenced by Paul Anka and Buddy Holly’s styling, both known for their unique singing voice. The line “Talk Back Trembling Lips” is simply a line of self-encouragement that many people would relate to.

The song was penned by John Loudermilk, who is known as a songwriter who wasn’t afraid to speak his mind through his words. In the song, the narrator tries to push himself into telling his partner what he truly feels whenever they face difficulties in their relationship.

Johnny Tillotson is an American singer-songwriter famous for releasing top hits that made almost all Billboard charts in pop, country, and adult contemporary.

However, aside from his original releases, his cover songs are also worth noting. Among these was his rendition of Ernest Ashworth’s number one hit, “Talk Back Trembling Lips,” which set the bar high.

Although nothing beats the original, there is no denying that Tillotson’s soft tone throughout the song got fans hooked on listening to his version. That, and the oozing charm seen in his music video as he stares at the camera as if gazing straight at the viewers, aka the ladies, who swoon over the handsome country star.

No wonder it’s considered no.1 among the countless covers released through the years. Because of his phenomenal success, Tillotson ended up getting inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame, which makes him one of the best artists of the 20th century.
