In 2019, legendary country singer George Strait made his fans happy when he released his hit song “God and Country Music” as part of his album Honky Tonk Time Machine. The song was slow and sparse, giving off that signature George Strait flair to it. Although no reports of the song landing on any charts, it was still considered one of George Strait’s greatest hits

The song has that timeless simplicity to it that makes it quite a bop among listeners. With George Strait’s baritone voice, he beautifully showcased the message of the song in a lighter, fluffier way, like how the 80s and 90s country singers do it.

It is a fresh take on an old traditional country song in this modern age. But what made this song such a hit among listeners, aside from its catchy tune, is George Strait’s cute six-year-old grandson, Harvey.

During a Houston Rodeo show in Houston, Texas, the adorable duo performed probably the cutest and sweetest version of the song ever released. For a six-year-old, Harvey showcases a natural talent for singing, just like his legendary grandpa.

But the duet becomes more powerful once we learn about the meaning of the song, and how their rendition is such a timely representation of the song’s real message.

Meaning Behind the Song

Written by Luke Laird, Barry Dean, and Lori McKenna, “God and Country Music” is simply a song that reminds us God and Country Music are “two things still worth saving.”

Now that we are in a generation where other music genres are starting to take over the industry while country music is left in the backrooms, the song reminds us that saving country music is not too late at all.

The song simply celebrates the music of the past, reminding us that we shouldn’t let the new generation forget the foundation that built the music industry we have today.

That is why George Strait’s duet with his six-year-old grandson gives such a powerful message to everyone, that it is not too late to preserve authentic traditional country music – all we have to do is introduce it to the younger ones.

So if you missed out on watching George Strait and his grandson’s adorable duet of “God and Country Music,” you can watch the whole performance below.
