Dolly Parton has always been full of stories, but this one about her late husband Carl Dean might be one of the funniest.
Carl Dean, who passed away in March at the age of 82, spent nearly 60 years as Dolly’s other half. Fans know him as the famously private man who avoided the spotlight while Dolly became one of the most recognized stars in the world. But during a recent livestream with Reba McEntire to promote Dolly’s upcoming book Star of the Show: My Life on Stage, the country queen shared a memory that shows Carl had his own mischievous streak, and it nearly ended with him in handcuffs.
The story takes us back to the Kentucky State Fair, one of Carl’s favorite outings. Dolly explained that her husband loved wandering the grounds, looking at the tractors, trucks, cows, pigs, and horses. He was not there to be part of the show, at least not officially. Yet on that night, Carl decided to pull a fast one on his superstar wife.
As Dolly opened her performance with “Higher and Higher,” something about the background vocals sounded off. At first, she thought her singers were out of key, but when she turned around, she realized the culprit was Carl himself, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with her backup singer Richard Dennison. Richard was married to Dolly’s sister Rachel at the time, which made Carl’s little stunt even easier to pull off.
Dolly admitted she had no idea Carl was even at the fair that night. He had just driven up on his own, walked backstage, and slipped right into the lineup as if he belonged there. She recalled thinking, “What in the world is he doing up there?” Carl must have thought he could get away with it, blending in and jumping back offstage before Dolly caught him. But he underestimated his wife’s sharp ear and sharper wit.
Instead of letting it slide, Dolly decided to turn the tables. She leaned over to security and said she did not know who that man was and asked them to remove him. She was serious about letting them drag him off before he could explain himself. In her words, “No, he never went on stage again because I was not gonna let him. That was so out of character for him.”
Dolly’s road manager, Don Warden, also got in on the joke, telling her he would have security haul Carl to jail just to get one over on him. Of course, they let him off the hook, but not before the moment was immortalized in a photograph that ended up in the Louisville paper the next morning.
The picture, which shows Carl arm in arm with Dennison mid-song, is now included in Dolly’s new book along with her retelling of the story. And it captures something rare, which is Carl letting himself get pulled into Dolly’s world on stage, if only for one night.
For a man who shunned the spotlight, the prank revealed another side of their marriage. It showed how even in the middle of Dolly’s dazzling career, they could still share private jokes and moments that belonged only to them. Their love lasted nearly six decades because they did not take themselves too seriously. Even when life got heavy, laughter was never far away.
Looking back, Dolly laughs at the memory, although she is quick to point out that Carl never tried anything like that again. But that one night at the Kentucky State Fair became a story she treasures, a story that shows just how much fun they had together, even when he nearly ended up in jail.
